  • Having Problems with RTX rendering in Vray Rhino with new laptop

    Hi,
I recently purchased a surface book 3 with the NVIDA Quadro RTX 3000 with max-q and have noticed some issues in rendering certain files ( see attached). On files where objects have SSS materials I can start an RTX rendering but the resulting image quality is poor. When I try rendering again with RTX, the render window is just black. If I switch to CUDA for rendering the window is also black. But, if I switch to GPU rendering the image renders and looks good. This only seems to happen with SSS materials. I tried rendering the file after removing all SSS materials and had no problems with this RTX graphics card. I had read somewhere that there was an issue with refraction on some graphics cards. How do I know if this is the case here and how do I fix it. This is NVidia's premier mobile graphics card right now. I would think that it would be an improvement over the 1070 card that I have in another laptop that works fine for RTX rendering. In any case, below are descriptions of my set up, the file I used and the rendering window info. Thanks, jeff

      Hello Sculptn,

could you please rollback to the recommended version 445.87, described here, and give us feedback if there's any change?

Also - please, upload here your scene by using the Pack Project Tool to take a look at it.

      Thanks in advance.

      Best regards,
      Tsvetomira

          Hi Tsvetomira ,
So I went to the link you sent and am not sure how to roll back to 445.87 from this link. When I clicked on either the "try" or "Rhino Vray" buttons it sent me to my download area where I only have access to downloadable versions of vray for Rhino.

Do you have instructions for how to roll back?
          thanks,
          Jeff

            Hello Jeff,

Thank you for the provided scene.

The recommended NVIDIA driver for V-Ray GPU is version 445.87.
It was described in the web page I linked earlier.
            Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Keep your current 4.20.02 V-Ray version.

Try it and gives us feedback.
            We're here to help.

            Best regards,
            Tsvetomira

              Hi Tsvetomira,
Well, I spent the last few hours trying to roll back the NVIDIA driver I have to 445.87 and I'm having no luck. I have a call into NVIDIA to figure out why it is so hard to do this. In any case, There is a new driver that NVIDIA is trying to install on my machine (451.4 which has this description:
              "What’s New in Version 450 U1
              • RTX-Powered Creative App Updates.
This driver is validated against the latest GPU-accelerated creative app releases including the following.
                • V-Ray 5 GPU
Adds out-of-core geometry support for working with large scenes.
                • Corel Painter 2021
Includes 2x increase in GPU-accelerated brush engines.
                • Substance Alchemist
Adds AI to the Image to Material feature.
                • Blender Cycles
                  Adds AI to denoiser.
                • Premiere Pro
Adds hardware encoding using NVIDIA Encoder.
              • Added support for Windows 10 Version 2004 (May 2020 Update).
                Includes support for Hardware Scheduling.
              • Added support for CUDA 11.0.
              • Added support for DirectX 12 Ultimate.
Includes support for the following technologies:
                • DirectX Raytracing 1.1
                • Variable Rate Shading
                • Mesh Shaders
                • Sampler Feedback
              • Added support for Vulkan swapgroups on single and multiple GPU configurations (see R451.48 Release Notes for limitations).
              • NVIDIA Control Panel – “Run with graphics processor” control is not available starting with Windows 10 Version 2004 (May 2020 Update).
              • Added security updates for driver components.
See the NVIDIA Security Bulletin 5031 for details."
Does it seem as though this newer driver will solve any issues?

              Thanks,

              Jeff

                Hi Jeff,

for now the recommended version is 445.87.
Please, try again from here: https://www.nvidia.com/download/driv...x/159420/en-us

If you experience issues about uninstalling the current one or replacing it use Display Driver Uninstaller and try again.

We investigate your file and couldn't reproduce the issue in our office.

If the driver change won't work, it would be best to arrange a teamviewer session.

                Best regards,
                Tsvetomira

                  Hi Tsvetomira,
Yep, this was the same link I tried before. I got this message when trying to install the older driver:

Anyway, I hope to get ahold of someone at NVidia today to try to find a solution to this. Hopefully there is a way to force my machine to downgrade to the older driver. I'll let you know how this works out.
                  cheers,

                  jeff

                      Hi Tsvetomira,
Well, I was able to uninstall the current driver and get the graphics card at least back to 442.19. When I ran the RTX render option it again did not render correctly (see attached process window notes). When I ran CUDA this time though it did render correctly, so some success here. Hopefully there is something in the note files that helps you. I also have a call into NVidia to try to get the graphics card to 445.87 driver. Hopefully they get back to me tomorrow.
