  • Vray for Rhino Materials disappear

    Good morning,

I have a problem that happened first with Vray Next for Rhino a few month ago and last week with the trial version of Vray 5 for Rhino as well:
I created some materials for my project directly in Vray, I saved it and reopened it. All the materials were gone; not a single material left.
In Rhino, in the layer panels next to the layer, the material was still there, but I couldn’t change it anymore from Vray.
As this happened with Vray Next and Vray 5, I hope you can help me with this issue. Apparently I’m not the only one, because the same happened to my co-worker this morning: he downloaded Vray 5 a few days ago, today all the materials he used were gone.
I would really appreciate if you could help me!

    My specs are:
    Windows 10
    Rhino 6 SR 31
V-Ray for Rhinoceros 6 5.00.01, before it was Vray Next

    best regards
    Ivan

    Hi Ivan,

This could happen when switching between V-Ray versions as V-Ray is not backward-compatible - meaning that projects saved with newer versions (i.e., V-Ray 5) will not work with older versions (i.e., V-Ray Next)
Please confirm if that was the case with you and your co-worker.

If not, we will need some further information in order to find the culprit.
    • Does this happen with a specific project?
    • Would the issue persist with a newly created project?
    • Are the maps located in a shared network?
    • Can you let me know if the textures/file path names contain non-standard Latin characters?
    • If it is a project-specific issue, best would be to forward the files through our contact form

      Hi Nikoleta,

thank you for the reply. This issue also happened when I opened a completely new project in Vray 5. Unfortunately I recreated all the materials in the project and therefore I can’t send you any file now. If it happens again, I will save it and send it to you.
When I save a new project in Rhino, I have the "save textures" checked. Could that make a difference? But as I said, it happened only twice until now.
The maps are not located in a shared network, thex are local on my laptop. The same as for my friend. And no latin names either.
As i said, if it happens again, I will save it and send it to Chaos Group.

      Best Regards
      Ivan

I'm having exactly the same issues using Vray 5 + Rhino 7. I've tried every combination of local / network default materials, including new file paths, etc. As Rhino doesn't recognise the new .tx file type, the bitmaps are now saved as temporary files with random filename in C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Local\Temp\McNeel\Rhino\V7 \TextureCache\ - these are deleted whenever the Rhino file is closed. When the file is reopened, materials are retained yet all .tx textures appear missing as they need to be converted again. Each material needs to be remodified in the Asset Editor for the .tx bitmaps to appear in the Rhino viewport. I can't find a method to update all materials at once so the quickest way is to uncheck / check the "Can be Overridden" option.

          Hi iv_bo and NDRSN,

This sounds like a pretty major issue and we'll need some more details to address it.
Are the materials completely gone from the Asset Editor's list when you load the scene?
Do they render correctly or there is a difference.

I suspect this has nothing to do with textures and texture paths.

As far as the .tx files are concerned - Rhino does not support tx maps at all.
We have implemented custom handling for such textures.
The .tx file is rendered by V-Ray while a jpg preview texture is auto-generated and displayed in the Rhino viewport.

          Regards,
          Konstantin

            Hi there.
I have the same problem with Rhino 5 and V-Ray 3.60.03. Open a file and the materials list on the V-Ray asset editor is empty. If I click the objects, it mentions in the 'material' properties of Rhino, the name of the material applied, and even more strange is that some of these materials are rendered correctly and others go black. This has been happening a lot. Sometimes works just exiting and reopen the file, one, two, or three times and (don't know why) the materials are there again but others not.
I just had a crash when I was working (this has been happening a lot too - and the files are very small and simple) and Rhino made a crash file that saved the materials applied to some objects, but V-Ray list was empty. This time I wasn't so lucky because I have already exit and reopen several times the file and the materials were gone.
It would be really important that these situations wouldn't happen again, at least not so often.
            Thanks.
            Regards
            Jose

i seem to have "fixed" the issue below by:
-saving as a new file with "save textures" unchecked
-deleting all materials FROM THE RHINO MATERIALS INTERFACE (not the vray one).
-unchecking "can be overridden" for all materials in the vray interface
-re-applying materials to objects/layers as needed
-on re-open of the file, i still get a dialogue saying that I'm missing a few texture files. i just "remove" them and move on with my day. everything seems to be working fine.

This is clearly a kludgy workaround but it is keeping me moving for the moment.

              Original post:
I am having a similar issue. I am running Rhino 7 + Vray 5, most recent updates/drivers/etc. It seems like when you apply a VRay material via the Rhino interface (applying a material to a layer, say) Rhino basically co-opts that material and places its textures in a Temp folder with random filenames. The next time you open Rhino, those textures are missing. I still have the materials in my VRay asset browser, but many of them appear to be trying to duplicate themselves (maybe as a result of the missing textures?). Some - but not all - of the materials' render appearances are affected. It's a mess.

I am having this exact same issue. Very frustrating and annoying.

I am having the same issue as well, spent an hour redoing the materials, only for the same problem to happen again...

                    Having this issue as well.

Every week there's a new problem with Vray that I have to resolve. This software is buggy beyond belief

In case you haven't already reached out to our Support team could you please confirm whether you've encountered this issue with a specific project or a newly-created one?
If the issue occurs only with a specific project, are you able to recall what was the previous version of V-Ray when it was saved before reopening it now?
The swiftest way to assist you would be by investigating a scene exhibiting this issue. If you are willing to share one with us, our dev team will look into it right away.

                      Kind regards,
                      Peter

I have the same problem with Rhino 7 and latest Vray.

When I give materials to objects in Vray, strangely it suddenly copy itself every time I give the same material to selected objects. The materials copy themselves automatically when I trying to give them to a new object.
And then I click on purge. However it purged the materials I was using. I don't know how it done but some of my using materials disappeared and some not. Therefore I have the same issue as the others, the materials are not showing up in Vray but in Rhino.
It's a newly-created project if anyone needs to know that.

I hope Vray team could solve this bug, I can redo materials this time but I don't want to redo it next time.

                          HI nan_it,

Does this happen only with the latest V-Ray update? Is it possible to share a project with the issue reproducible so we can see what's happening, or alternatively, share some steps to reproduce? Thanks!

Hi, I only use the latest version ( actually I just download it a week ago). Sorry I can't share the project but today when I was redo the materials thing, I noticed if I exploded the polysurfaces and re-join them again then there would be no self duplicate materials. As for disappeared materials in vray, I have no clue at all.

                              Hi nan_it,

I'm afraid we're unable to reproduce such issues, an alternative would be to schedule a remotes session so we could investigate on the spot. You can get in touch via our contact form, just make sure to mention this thread in the subject. Thanks!
