  • Vray rope texture mapping issues on noodle shape

Hi I am unable to get the rope texture wrapped around this shape the way I want and was hoping I could get some help on how to best get the result I want which is to make his appear to be twisted rope. I will eventually want to try and bump map to get a more realistic effect but will start with the proper alignment of the rope texture. I have tried to use cylindrical mapping around a curve but must not be understanding the tool as I do get the results I am wanting. Thank you for any help.

If you don't need the end caps, than you could remove them. Than try _unpacktexture since best you use the native surface UV and no other mapping type. If the NURBS surface has an inhomogeneous UV density, than delete the surface. Now rebuild the curve (you used a curve?) with a high count so that the difference between original curve and new curve is acceptable. Now you have a homogeneous curve and if you use _pipe you get a homogeneous NURBS. Apply you texture and adjust the UV repeat like wanted. I can be that you need u=1 and v=100.

That is a big improvement over where I was, any thoughts on getting the seam to line up better? Thank you.

You need a seamless texture and it should be perfect looking. You could crop your texture until left/right and top/down edges match.

I checked your texture and it's seamless. So, I suppose so Rhino packed the texture. Try _UnpackTextures at you new created pipe. Doe's it work?

I was able to twist the mesh texture a little and get to look almost seamless. I am not sure how the unpack textures command affects anything though sorry not as familiar with using it or what it is doing. now I am just try to learn how to use the bump mapping and I will be all set.

I downloaded you model at the Rhino forum and the solution is simpler than thought - you need to adjust the texture repeat only.

Oh man that is much easier. Sorry I feel kind of silly now. Thank you so much I think this is all good now for me.

Just wanted to post the more final look I was going for. I ended up using displacement mapping and bump mapping rather than using the original texture for shading. Very happy this is exactly what I was trying to do.

I would use the original diffuse texture or better use a grey version and use the color gain of the texture option to adjust any wanted color. The diffuse texture has the fine shadows between the subrobes which you don't get per displacement only.
