  • Rhino file size increases with Vray 6.20

    Hi, we used to work in Rhino 8 with Vray 5 and are now testing Vray 6.20 in Rhino 8. What we realised is, that when we open the Rhino 8 Vray 5 files with the new Vray version, it updates them to the new VRay settings. Then once we save that same file its size increase two- to threefold. One 3D file went from 250 to 500MB and a 2D file from 16 to 48MB. The workflow therefore becomes significantly slower and additional server space is needed.

    Is this a known issue and is there a workaround?

    Hello jens_borstelmann,
    Welcome to the Chaos Forum!

    Could you please share one or two of your scenes so we could test it on our side? If that is okay with you please open a ticket using this submit request form and upload your files.
    Please send those that are saved with the V-Ray 5 version and are still with initial file size.

      In a ticket we have discussed that differences in file size are expected and are due to compression changes that were implemented in V-Ray 6.
      More details can be found in this article: V-Ray 6 for Rhino embedded textures size changes.

        I,
        same problem for me. Files are very big now and rendering are very long to start....

          Hello ddd_architectesassocies,

          In order to reduce file size you can choose to not embed textures in your file: File>Save as and disable Save textures (example).

          Or as shared in the article you can change image quality of the embedded textures. To do that follow these steps:
          • Run vrayTexturePreviewSettings command in your scene and change MatchBitmapResolution=Off;
          • Save scene and close Rhino;
          • Go to %temp%\McNeel\Rhino\V7\TextureCache and delete all textures; (If there is a folder with embedded textures, try to delete this one as well)
          • Open your scene and save it once again (try with Save as) - now there should be drastic file size reduction.
          and rendering are very long to start
          What render engine are you using? If it is GPU you can try to optimize textures for rendering as well by selecting the Compressed textures option in the V-Ray GPU Tab (example).
