  • Trouble importing Vray objects into other files.

I'm having a lot of trouble with the latest V-ray releases.

Things that just don't work and/or will crash Rhino:
    1. Importing/inserting a Rhino file with a V-ray scatter geometry. (Only the guests of the scatter objects are visible, but without textures)
      • Scatter objects from pre 6.20 will cause crashes with a lot of my files when rendering with vray 6.20
    2. Importing/inserting a Rhino file with V-ray decals (decals objects are visible, but not vray decals anymore
      • Decals made with pre 6.20 versions of V-ray seem to have less problems i.e most of the time importing a file with these decals works like it should.
      • Materials as well as geometries are not imported
    3. Importing/inserting a Rhino file with V-ray lights just won't work, only option is to copy/paste them separately
    4. Importing/inserting a Rhino file with imported assets from Cosmos. Sometimes they are visible, but without textures
    5. Importing/inserting another Rhino file while the V-ray framebuffer window is still rendering results in a crash most of the times
    6. Deleting an object that is a guest of a scatter geometry will often result in a crash
    7. Importing/inserting a a Rhino file with a displacement geometry will not work. Need to copy/paste to make it work.
    8. V-ray framebuffer is really slow in showing the render preview when there are displacement geometries in the drawing.
    9. Although all my materials come from a shared library on a networkdrive, folders for lots of files containing bitmaps for materials keep appearing in the folders of the Rhino files. Deleting the folders has no noticable effect on the render output.

I'm using RHINO 7 as well as 8 with the latest updates and the latest vray 6.20.02. (update 2.2, update 2 and 2.1 were even worse)
Right now Rhino/vray is crashing multiple times a day when working om my files.

I'm having these problems on multiple computers with different hardware.

    Hello rene_rapati,
Thank you for reaching out to us.

Would you be willing to arrange a TeamViewer session with us? It would be very helpful if you could demonstrate all the described issues on your machine in order to record your actions. Additionally, we could collect all needed additional information: such as versions, hardware, steps to reproduce and logs.
If this sounds plausible please submit a ticket, this way we will be able to share instructions on how to book a session.

    Thank you in advance.

I don't know if a Teamviewer session would help, but in the mean time I have been able to reproduce at least three of my problems:

Well, I found an extra problem with V-ray...
Importing a drawing with an enmesh geometry has the same problem as the above mentioned objects.

          So another summary:
Enmesh, Scatter and Displacement geometries as well as Decals will not import correctly when there is a linked block in the imported drawing.

            Hello @rene_rapati,

Thank you so much for your effort in troubleshooting and reporting this issue! Your reports are incredibly valuable to us as they help us identify and document problems, allowing our developers to concentrate on finding a solution.

After looking into what you have described and testing projects containing Linked Blocks in Rhino, we were able to identify two main issues:
            01. Scatter Assets imported with linked blocks have empty Guest lists (VRW-4421)
            02. If .3dm containing Linked Blocks and V-Ray geometry or/and lights is imported, all V-Ray Geometry and Lights will be missing from the asset editor. (VRW-4419)

Both issues are now logged with high priority in our internal system, and our developers are already looking into providing a fix.
I will update the post once there is further news or when the issue is solved.

Reading the release notes of the 2.3 update, I conclude that the above problems were not fixed in the latest release? Can anyone confirm this?

Is it possible to estimate when these problems will be fixed?

                Hello, Rene,
Both of the problems you described remain outstanding in V-Ray 6.20.03.

Regarding the first issue - 01. Scatter Assets imported with linked blocks have empty Guest lists (VRW-4421) - after assessment by our dev team it was deemed that Scatter asset with guests confined within blocks cannot not be supported.
As for the second report - 02. If .3dm containing Linked Blocks and V-Ray geometry or/and lights is imported, all V-Ray Geometry and Lights will be missing from the asset editor. (VRW-4419) - this one did not make it in the latest updated but is scheduled for the next one.

                Kind regards,
                Peter

                  Hello Peter,

                  Thanks for the update!
Fortunately Issue 01 was not something I was having trouble with.
Issue 02 however was and still is giving me a lot of trouble. I hope the next update will be very soon. Is it possible to give an approximate time frame for the release of the next update? Weeks? Months?

Any updates when this will finally be fixed (VRW-4419)? The release notes from update 2.4 do not mention a fix for this.
Some basic testing with the new version reveals the same annoying problem still persists.
