  • V-Ray for Rhino: Fog Multiplier/ Depth & Photon Mapping Caustics (Realistic Water Material/ Setting)

Hello, I'm a Vray for Rhino newbie.

I'm currently trying to create a water surface that allows sunlight to go through so that the room inside the space has a caustic effect.
However, it's very frustrating that there isn't a currently updated version of the tutorial for Rhino.

    1. Fog Multiplier
I keep seeing 'Fog Multiplier,' which seems as it used to be in the old version.
Where did it go? I only see 'Depth' under 'Fog Color'
Also, what would be the relationship between the old settings of 'Fog Multiplier' stuff and the new version's 'depth'
The tutorials say the 'Fog Multiplier' has to be small while a change of 'Depth' doesn't really do anything unless it's either 1 or 0.
I hope I could adjust this more accurately, not on or off
    The tutorials I watched are:

The values of the 'Fog Multiplier' are small in the tutorial

I tried to make the value of 'Depth' small to see if the 'Fog Multiplier' became 'Depth' or whatever
Value 1 and 0.003 are the same while 0 shows full transparency

    2. Photon Mapping
I finally saw a tutorial with a 'depth' setting. This person turned on 'Depth' up to 50cm. (I don't know higher value makes it a little more transparent while the smaller number just makes the water opaque.)
However, as he moves to the render setting, I do not see my 'Photon Mapping Caustics' setting.
I assume I could use the 'Caustics.' However, when I turn on, I can't change 'Max Photons' and 'Max Density'
    Q. How do I turn on the photon setting??

Please someone save this poor newbie.

    Thank you

Hi, I've tryed before same thing and I sympathized as a Rhino user. I can't help completely but I hope it would be a little help. Blender seems easy escape... You can search "Blender Market, gobos, caustics" Good luck! And teach me your success.

So, I've been watching tutorials endlessly.
      1. 'Fog Multiplier'
I do not know what replaced this, but it seems as if 'Depth' has to be 0

      2. 'Photon Mapping'
One of YouTube tutorials said that the Photon Mapping can't be adjusted when it's set as 'Progressive'

However, although I adjusted everything, the result didn't come out as I wanted...

        Hello, nicole_kim,

        1. The previous "Fog Multiplier" parameter was replaced by "Depth" - smaller values reduce the effect of the fog, making the material more transparent. Larger values increase the fog effect, making the material more opaque. It depends on how you want your water to look like - increasing the Depth (if your Fog color is different than white) will make your water more opaque, which will be useful, for example, for rendering sea water.

        2. There are two types of Caustics - Progressive and Photon mapping based. First you need to enable the Caustics toggle in Asset Editor:
Click image for larger version Name:	Caustics_toggle.png Views:	0 Size:	142.2 KB ID:	1210073

Under Calculation Mode > Mode you can choose between Photon Map Caustics ( Mode > New Map or load the saved Caustics map with From File) or Progressive Caustics:
Click image for larger version Name:	Photon_Mapping_Caustics.png Views:	0 Size:	87.7 KB ID:	1210074

Here you can find detailed information and examples on Caustics - https://docs.chaos.com/display/VRHIN...l+Illumination .

Let me know if this helps and if you have any further questions on the Caustics settings.

        Kind regards,
        Iva
