  • Issues Encountered While Using V-Ray for Grasshopper

Every time I try to open V-Ray directly within Grasshopper, I am unable to open the VFB (V-Ray Frame Buffer) window. This means that I often can't directly view the render results when using V-Ray for Grasshopper. I believe this is a bug, as I’ve encountered this issue on at least two different computers. However, I did find a workaround: before opening Grasshopper, I need to open Rhino, then manually open the VFB window in V-Ray and ensure it renders correctly. After this, I can open Grasshopper, and the V-Ray components in Grasshopper work as expected.

The second issue occurs when I start Render Animation using a prepared Grasshopper workflow. Many times, the process crashes in the middle of rendering. Although it occasionally manages to complete all the renders, in the vast majority of cases, the entire Rhino, Grasshopper, and V-Ray setup crashes without any warning or save prompts—the software just closes abruptly. I’ve encountered this issue on both of my computers.

My graphics card is an NVIDIA RTX 3080 with 10GB of VRAM, and I have 64GB of RAM. All of my hardware is relatively high-end. I’m using Rhino 8 and the latest version of V-Ray (6.20). I would greatly appreciate any help or advice.

    Dear zhang_han, hello.

    Welcome to Chaos Forums!
Please be informed that I will move this thread to V-Ray for Rhino :: Issues to keep the Chaos ordered.

About opening VFB, please answer the following:
    • VFB is not showing when trying to render or your are trying to open the VFB by right-clicking over the V-Ray Render component > Show Frame Buffer
    • is it happening with every scene (even in a newly created one)
    • There is a status bar at the bottom part of the V-Ray Render component (showing Uninitialized, Rendering, Ready...). When you are not able to see/open the VFB what is written at the status bar?
About crashing when rendering animations - please define what engine is chosen - CPU, CUDA, RTX and we will proceed with the investigation.

    Waiting for your answer.

    Best regards,
    TS

Thank you for your reply. I’ve tried clicking "Show Frame Buffer," but nothing happens.

This issue occurs in every scenario, even when I’ve just opened Rhino. If I don’t open the Frame Buffer before opening Grasshopper, I find that I’m unable to open it later, even if Grasshopper is empty with no content loaded. At this point, if I try to open the Frame Buffer, it simply doesn’t respond. The status bar at the bottom of the render component displays "rendering" (as shown in the image).

I’ve tried both the RTX and CUDA engines, and it seems that both can cause crashes, with the RTX engine having a much higher likelihood of crashing.

My graphics card drivers are already updated to the latest version. Additionally, on my other computer, after installing V-Ray, I’m unable to complete the license verification process. It always displays a network error. I’ve seen online that this might not be an isolated issue. If possible, I’d like to bring this to your attention as well, hoping that the V-Ray team can improve this aspect. Thank you!

          Hi again,

          Let's continue one by one.

          1. Connection to License server
          • if you refresh the page is there any difference? Sometimes after installing a new build the page may not open properly, but if you refresh the page you will see the login screen
          • if Refresh isn't helping be aware that our Tech Support team is solving this kind of requests via ticket - use our contact form. Under Request Type please choose Technical Assistance Starting the Product.
          2. VFB not showing
          • after starting a render from V-Ray for Grasshopper, if you hover over the Rhino icon at the taskbar are you seeing there a minimized VFB window
          • you mentioned
before opening Grasshopper, I need to open Rhino, then manually open the VFB window in V-Ray and ensure it renders correctly
            - are you opening Grasshopper without initially opening Rhino? There are some additional plug-ins to do so, but they are external resources. Are you opening the .gh by double-clicking over it? This should be cleared out for sure.
          3. GPU crash when rendering animations
          • we have encountered similar behaviour and it is now logged in our system with VGPU-6502
          • to be sure that it is related to the mentioned issue, please share with us a .dmp file (created on Desktop right after the crash; it gets deleted after some time, so please look at your Desktop right after the crash for the file with .dmp extension) and a test scene which is crashing on your configuration (we will need the GH definition + Rhino file by choosing V-Ray > Pack Project)
Better may be to share files via our contact form. Please add also the forum link in the description and be informed that scene related issues, which our team is responsible for, are directly delivered to us when choosing 3D and Rendering Help under Request Type.
          • as a workaround please try rendering the animations in Rhino by using Render in Project component and in V-Ray Asset Editor change the Global Illumination settings to Brute Force + Brute Force. Share are you still experiencing any GPU crash with this setup.
