  • Scatter preview Not Working correctly in Viewport

Since V-ray 6.2 the Scatter tool preview is not responsive and does not work as expected in the Rhino Viewport

There are several issues I have noticed:

N1: In the past when applying scatter to an object if you hide that object from the viewport the scatter preview also gets hidden.

In the current version hiding the scatter object leaves the scatter preview in the viewport (creating a clutter in the viewport)

N2: Even if you remove the scattering from a certain object the Rhino viewport still displays it as if its there - creating confusion as to what will actually get rendered out.

N3: If scatter is re-applied to a surface than the scatter preview disapears all together and even though the scatter renders the vieport does not display any preview.

N4 When the scatter is turned ON/ OFF in the V-ray edditor the scatter is still displayed in the viewport preview which again causes confusion as to what is actually going to render.

In general the Viewport preview is unresponsive / doesnt sunch up well with the scatter tools in the asset editor.

These problems were not present in earlier versions of V-ray when the scatter was first introduced so as new capabilities have been roled out so have some issues.

Happy to provide further details if it increases the chances of this being adressed in the next version.

Lasrtly - this is more of a suggestions and I am happy to make a new post about it: You should be able to applying multiple scatters to a single surface.
A landscape surface that has Grass/ Plants / Trees should not have to have 3 versions of the same object if you want to control the different scatter parameters seperatly.

I suggest there is an extra toolbar in the Scatter properties for each scatter where it lists which surfaces are included in the "Area" that will be scattered on.
ideally Different scatters can than use the same surface as a "Host"

    Hello deyan_saev,
    Thank you for each point.
    Please see my answers below:

N1: In the past when applying scatter to an object if you hide that object from the viewport the scatter preview also gets hidden. In the current version hiding the scatter object leaves the scatter preview in the viewport (creating a clutter in the viewport)
Thank you for bringing the change to our attention. My colleague ivelina_mincheva tested and logged described issue internally as VRW-4586.

This one is logged as VRW-4585. Note that the issue is reproducible when working from the Rhino V-Ray object Properties, not from V-Ray Asset Editor. As a workaround preview can be updated by renaming Scatter in the Asset Editor.

N4 When the scatter is turned ON/ OFF in the V-ray edditor the scatter is still displayed in the viewport preview which again causes confusion as to what is actually going to render.
We were not able to reproduce this scenario, can you please specify which exact build you have installed at the moment and share a video example of your test preferably in a new scene? Thank you in advance.

You should be able to applying multiple scatters to a single surface.
There are plans to implement multiple modifiers for one object. We have linked your post to all mentioned tasks and once there are any changes we will let you know.

In general I would like to share that recently we have introduced new system for feature requests - https://chaosvray.ideas.aha.io/?project=VRHINO where you can add your ideas and see what other customers have added.

      Hello Natalia,

Thank you for looking in to this and logging the reported issues!

In regards to problem N3 described above:
"N3: If scatter is re-applied to a surface than the scatter preview disapears all together and even though the scatter renders the vieport does not display any preview."

You are right that re-naming the scatter in the asset edito seems to solve the issue of not being able to see the previews which is good to know! Hopefully in the future version this wont be necessary.

As for N4 I myself am unable to replicate this again in a fresh empty scene.

However I do have a recording of it occuring in existing model that is relativly large.

      Please see the link below:

      Rhino Build: 7.26.23346.16351
      V-ray Version: 6.20.06

I will keep a look out for this occuring in other scenes

Hello Deyan! I apologize for the late reply.

However I do have a recording of it occuring in existing model that is relativly large.
Would you be able to share the scene with us so we could test it on our machines?
If this is alright open a ticket and upload a packed scene for us to check.

        Thank you in advance.
