  • Beta9: Reflection Subdiv

    Hi,

When both highlight and reflection glossiness are 1.0 then the subdivisions always default to 8 and cannot be changed (Changing that number and pressing apply has no effect).

However, if any of the glossiness values is changed, only then a new sudbiv number can be retained. If both glossiness values are set back to 1.0 again then the subdivs jump to 8 automatically.

    Is this by design ?

If glossy=1.0 this means no glossy, so the subdiv value has no effect at all. But I agree it is annyoing that it resets to 8 each time you go back to glossy 1.0.

I think it is the opposite... 1.0 means full gloss (totally shinny) and 0.0 means full blur.

Yeah sorry, the term glossy in 3D world got a wrong meaning. Many times, people call a blurry reflection a glossy one... That's confusion coming from the name next to the value. I'm sure you know what I meant 1.0 means no blur, so the subdiv value has no use then.

          I know what you mean

Just wanted to make sure about the use of the term, because I have noticed a good deal of confusion in this regard ... some people even tried to brainwash me sometime ago over at CGtalk

Hehe yeah, it took me a while to suddenly see that I was using the wrong term for years, and now I still do

Wouter, in this case (fully shinny) what controls the quality of the reflections ?
Some engines (such as AIR) have a separate control for the definition of the reflected images, is this not the case with Vray (are they always traced at best quality when glossy=1.0) ?

Yes they are always at best, it is the AA that controls the quality. Subdivs are only necessary for blurry stuff like blurry reflections, area shadows, DOF etc...

A sharp reflection is always good, so the quality depends on AA, just like the quality of your objects edges for example.
