  • Vray doesn't play well with Flamingo

I know the answer to this is ultimately to ditch Flamingo (I'm trying!) but here is an issue...

I've tried to use the same file to render with Flamingo and Vray. After I use vray and go back to Flamingo, my materials are messed up. The names are correct, but when I open the material browser, it's not really pointing to any material. The effect is that anything that was a glossy color material turns into a mirror reflective material.

Should I be able to flip renderers with no problems? It would be nice.

I think it was already discussed in previous post, and the conclusion is to duplicate your file and work them individually. Unless, as you saw, it mess the props.

Yeah that would be great but I don't know if I can accomplish that without making other people angry because rendered viewports will no longer work. The basic dilemma, if you'll remember from the previous time we discussed this, is that all renderers are working in the same space. Now we add UserData for our custom material information, however, if people want rendered viewports that means I have change the basic Rhino material because Rhino does not allow us (Plugins) to render the viewport during "rendered viewport" mode. So to have any approximation of our VRay material whatsoever I have to step all over whatever is currently in the basic Rhino material information, which could very well be important data if you have any plans of switching renderers.

I agree with you wholeheartedly that VRay should not step on other renderers information, but if I just abandon what I'm doing now people are going to ask why their rendered viewport "doesn't work" anymore. I suppose I can start up a dialog with some people at McNeel as to what the best way to do this may be, but I have the feeling the response is going to be choose one or the other - give up the rendered viewport, or continue doing what I'm doing now.

Thanks for the explanation. If I had to choose, I too would go with the rendered viewport. I'd like to quit Flamingo anyway!

Yeah and since flamingo and vray are so different, there's now way to convert materials in a decent way. Leave the pink bird for what it is and spend your time on vray, no way you'll ever want to go back!
