  • material of blocks

I don't know if it's a bug of vray or rhino:

    Create something,
    apply different materials to it.
    Block it
    insert it

    open material managers
purge unuse material (of course the one that you want to keep are only in the blocks)

    Result:
it purges the one used in the blocks.
So if you want to "update" the material of the blocks, you are grilled.

Is it happening all the time or it's just in my special voodoo case of copy paste in a new rhino windows and then purge and then... blablabla

If i understand you correctly block instances dont render. This is a McNeel problem. They also dont import into new scenes who have a different unit scale such as created as MM imported into CM.

    I blame the blocks.

nope, you didn't get me right.
I can insert blocks...etc, but if I purge the material in material editor, it erases the material that the blocks are using.

Interesting...I'll check into that - but I was under the impression you couldn't apply materials directly to blocks.

          you are right joe,
but if you create something, apply a texture, then do a block with it, you still can update the material, and it will affect the block even if you can't individually select a part of a block to associate a new material. you must modify the material that it's already associated with it.

I see - ok cool. I'll update my code to recurse into blocks before purging.

              Re: material of blocks

It is now june 2007, and I was just about to write a post about this issue when I discovered this thread.

Is there any news or solutions to this subject?

As I design loudspeakers I use a considerable amount of blocks for the speaker units and other standard parts. Then I use the blocks together with various enclosures.

So the problem for me is when I have cleaned up the file by purging the materials, I can't retrieve or get the materials back into the material editor from the objects from the exploded blocks. So theses materials are kind of lost in space ...

                  Thank you, Micha

So the solution seems to be to make blocks as external files rather than embedded blocks.

yes, you can edit the external blocks.
