You can check following: RAM usage of the Rhino.exe at the taskmanager. Without 3GB switch, Rhino should crash at 1.6GB at an 32bit OS. If The RAM usage is the problem, try the 3GB switch and look at my render tool collection.

Also, check out the large resolution tutorial. What you basically want to do is render to a VRimg if you're rendering at very high resolutions. Thats pretty much going to be the only way to get hires stuff done without a crash.

... you can also try this :

1)Re-export in new file your geometry and try to render the new one.
2)Use OMC for primary render engine / Light Cashe for secondary ones.
        3) Decrease bucket ( not so sure for the word in english - rendering squares ) size -presently I use 15x15 pix.
        4) When use VRfR4 be sure you dont have materials created with VRfR3 or Default Rhino type mats. So better apply simple diffuse mat to all objects and try rendering scene.

        ... good luck

At my render tool thread can be found a button script, that export all render meshes to a new file. An other button makes that an empty scene is loaded during the scene is send to the Vray engine. Both help to use so less RAM as possible.

The 3gb switch is an operating system thing, not Rhino. Its relatively straight forward, but it does require editing the boot.ini file. If you google search it there are a ton of things that come up.
