  • Rhino crash with new SR1 release

I'm having problems with the new SR1 release.

Rhino chrashes when I hit render. Sometimes I'm allowed to render, but then it crashes the second time.
I'm working on an old project that I started in the previous version. Now it is very messed up. The scene uses the physical sky and camera. Is there some sort of non-compatibilty between this version and pervious versions?

The new release also messes up the material names and the source paths for me. The paths are in unreadable text and I need to reassign and rename all materials again, but the worst thing is the constant crashing.
The previous version was very stable. I'm thinking of reversing to the old version, but I can't since it is saved in the new version.

Am I the only one having problems??

tle- it sounds like you possibly had a bad install of the product. You should probably completely uninstall the product, restart the computer, and then install it again. If you continue to have issues, please fill out our support request form so that we can focus on your issue, and resolve it promptly.

        Thank you dkending

I uninstalled and installed a few times now, but no luck.

I filled out a bug report with the rhino generated error report and sent it to Rhino yesterday. I just received an e-mail telling me they forwarded it you guys.

Re: Rhino crash with new SR1 release

          Hi again

I think the reason for the crash is the materials were all renamed with the new release including the map file paths.
All maps containing ÆØÅ (danish keyboard) were changed. F.ex. my material named "træ" (which is tree/wood in english) was renamed to "tr" (æ removed) and the filepath was messed up to for the same reasons and I think this is the reason to the rhino crash.

This is what a map file path looks like after installation (saved on E drive): ἘڮѨ=Ǽ̈DefaultMaterial

Another problem I encountered is the light properties menu. For the directional light I am able to change the shadow color, but the shadow color indicator (small box in properties) does not change color.
But if I change the light color the shadow color box is suddenly changed to display the same value as light color. I cannot change them individually without changing the other too. It is though they are tied together (are they supposed to be?).
After messing with these settings and hitting render I often get a crash.

          Regards Lee

Re: Rhino crash with new SR1 release

Hi - could you fill out a ticket in our support section and attach the file that is causing you trouble? We did add some stuff to try to make V-Ray capable of loading file names with wide character names so it is possible that there is an issue with that addition.

Re: Rhino crash with new SR1 release

              That`s right. all german words with ä, ü,ö,... (sign :* ` *) and ß crashed vray/ rhino.
please react as fast as you can. it`s horrible to correct all current projects and mats.

There are no fixes:same problem with sr 01.01.71-vray crashed with vray mats and jpgs which includes ä, ü, ect.

Best you send a support ticket with "crash" and "1.1.71" in the topic name. Could help, that Joe start with this bug.

Re: Rhino crash with new SR1 release

                    hey there
(my first post in here, so hello everybody!)

I encountered a similar thing the other day and now it keeps buggin me every time I try to render. with file and path names (eventhough they're english) there seems to be some confusion. the issues are:
                    - background maps stored in old and new .visopt files cannot be found/loaded. (png/jpg tested)
                    - maps in old materials are found/loaded, some maps in newly created materials fail. (png/jpg tested)
                    - trying to reassign maps does work from time to time, but not generally. (png/jpg tested)
                    - text in stamp gets lost on save and reload (I've had a "©" placed there, but now pressing [Alt]+[1][8][4] results in a "+" instead), leaving nothing but a tangled mass of hieroglyphics.

                    - Sometimes Rhino crashes shortly after V-Ray starts prepass (irradiance maps tested), two times DELETING the current save file.

I just detected that V-Ray tries to load maps in newly created materials from a temp folder (located in c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\asgvis\temp\ in my case) which I did not use, originally. Then, of course, the files aren't found there.

(Just sending this over to the support team, as well.)

Re: Rhino crash with new SR1 release

... against the crashes it helps sometimes to convert "grey" images like bump maps to "RGB". It seems to be, that Vray can render "grey", but it dosn't work stable.

Re: Rhino crash with new SR1 release

                        Think I found the problem:

I'm working on a project called "360° blahblahblah..." and somehow the new V-Ray build mismatched the "°" character in the project folder name and eventually replaced it with some hieroglyphics when saving the map paths in the .vismat file. That's at least what I just found out when removing SR1 and downgrading V-Ray to the Original version.
Well, it's interesting to see that the update apparently lacks correct special character handling. I guess fixing this (ASCII?) issue would be very much appreciated by users around the globe who (have to) use special characters.

Re: Rhino crash with new SR1 release

For SR1 we've expanded the range of characters that we work with. VfR is a fairly extensive program, so finding every single place where that affects things is not as easy as it sounds (especially when we don't necessarily use all of the newly available characters). We've sorted out many character related problems in internal builds, so if its becoming a major issue please send an email and we'll see what we can do.
