• Problem of "invalid color"

Hello everybody !

I'm actually making renderings of a yacht interior and everything is ok until I try a detail view of the table (with plates, glasses ...). I want to make a nice view with Depth Of Field and caustics but when Vray begin to calculate the light cache, it crashs before the end because

"Bitmap "(null)" returned an invalid color (rgb 12463232.000000 -37389952.000000 -43621504.000000)".

Does anybody got an idea of what is this and how to fix it ?

Thanks for your help !

Re: Problem of "invalid color"

I'm not really sure of exactly what the cause of this is, but it periodically shows up. At one point (2.5 years ago) this was traced to images (pngs I believe) being saved "funny", and resaving all the faulty maps as a jpeg resolved the issue. I'm almost sure that the texture side of things has been fixed, so I doubt that that is the cause, but that's the only thing that I've ever been able to track down as the cause of these issues.

I very rarely see this. For some reason I think this might be attributed to having Secondary Ray Bias set to .01 or .001. Is this part of your standard workflow Micha?

I get that sometimes also, but so far no crash .

May bias is set to .001.
What is yours Damien ?

Thanks for your replies.

My secondary ray biais is set at 0, I will try with 0.001 and I'll give you some news !

Re: Problem of "invalid color"

I have mine set to .001 unless it gets changed to something different when loading a visopt that I'm unfamiliar with or something. I also changed the defaults so that the secondary ray bias should be at .001

Thanks again for your help, I finally find the solution !

I had a material of fabric on my napkin (which was a mesh imported from max) which was a little bit transparent, so it gaves me some "invalid color". I put the transparency at 0 and everything is ok !

Good continuation, and congratulation for your dynamic forum.

Hi i have somethimes the same problem, and i find what is the reason The reason is incorect texture mapping on mesh objects. I have this problem only with mesh objects (converted Evermotion's max files into the *OBJ, and imported in Rhino scene) When i've try to make my own texture mapping, sometimes vray gives that error. Desition - with problem objects leave original mapping, or delete object ;D

Thanks for the info Alexander. That certainly makes a whole lot of sense as to why LC kicks back and invalid color (cause it can't find/interpolate one correctly). Next time I see this I'll try and confirm this. Thanks again

I have that problem even on my own drawing, nothing imported just plain Rhino.

Re: Problem of "invalid color"

I think I somehow triggered this bug when I tweaked some rectangular lights over the .02, or changed a bitmap on an emitter. I kept getting invalid results and it rendered forever as opposed to a few minutes like it had been before. I finally saved a small copy, wiped out the materials and reapplied them all and that did the trick.

Is renderings taking forever a result of this invalid color business?

Re: Problem of "invalid color"

The emitter was most likely at the root of the issue. From what Alexander said above, it seams to be related to texture coordinates getting messed up and not being able to return a valid color from the texture map that's applied to it. It could be that this is due to some of the "funky" geometry that Rhino can create from time to time.
