  • Vray proxy doesn't save materials

    Hi there,

I have a problem with creating vrayproxies (which would be such a nice feature to use). When I want to write a vray proxy (i.e. a high polygon tree with materials applied to layers), it doesn't export the materials, only the geometry. Any suggestions how this could work?

    Thanks
    Toni

    Hi Toni
First you have to make and apply all the V-Ray materials to the trees. Then you can convert the tree to proxy, but you have to use "automatically convert proxies". This will convert the tree (in this case) to proxy and keep the V-Ray materials. The materials are actually converted to multi material. If you import the proxy you will have some random material on the multi material. So, to avoid the random material, once I convert the object to proxy I use "export selected" to save the proxy as .3dm the Rhino native file. If I need it again, you can just import the .3dm proxy and it will have all the materials.

Ok thanks so much! This works well for me. But now it sometimes happens, that the proxy just disappears after writing it. Any idea how to solve that?

        Hi,

Can you specify the V-Ray build that you are using at the moment?

          Hi Tashko,

Of course: I'm using version 1.50.22165

If you know anything that could help, please let me know.

            Hi Toni

I'm not able to reproduce this issue here.
Can you provide me with more details, reproduction steps will be very helpful (Export menu settings).
Do you have this problem with all geometry objects?
Also make sure that you have selected your geometry before export it to proxy, because nothing will change.

              Hi,

I've attached a screenshot of my export settings to this post. And the weird thing is, that sometime it works and sometimes it doesn't. So it really seems like a bug to me. Even with the same file and the same settings. I've no clue what else it could be...

                Hi,

Unfortunately I'm not able to reproduce this issue here, even with the "Tree" scene file.
Does your model disappear from the view port when you get this issue or it stays the same?
Is your .vrscene file written at all?

The model just disappears and the file is written but when I open it, I can't see anything at all.

                    Hi,

This is very strange and i made a lot of tests but no success to get the same issue.
Unfortunately we need to reproduce it in our environment in order to send to the developers.
Do you get the same issue when export a simple Box, for an example?

I have the exactly same problem. Sometimes when I try to make a proxy, the model disappears from the scene. Then I have to import the proxy, and then the materials are gone, and I have to find out which multimat corresponds to the original material. Sometimes when I try to make a proxy, the model is transformed imidiately, and then the materials are saved.

I don't know why it sometimes work, and sometimes not.

Edit: I found out that it only works with some materials. I tried making a few boxes, and tried with different materials. Some worked fine, others didn't work. What can be wrong with the materials?

                      I'm using vray 1.5 and Rhino 4.0 SR 9

                        Hi Chrbjerre,

What are the materials do you use in the example scene?
Is it possible to post your test scene?
                        Thanks.

I can not reproduce the issue that make the proxy disappear either. Any chance to send us a scene file with the issue. In other hand V-Ray proxy doesn't support materials. We only support material if you automatic convert the model in your scene as proxy. If you import the proxy in other scene. You will get generic materials. What you can do is, once you automatic converted the proxy, save the proxy as .3dm, then when you need the proxy in other scene, you can import the 3dm file. Another thing that you can do for the materials, is save the correct materials, once you imported the proxy with generic materials, you can import the materials and just change the materials in the proxy multi-material for the correct one. But again the proxy doesn't support materials if you import them, this is not a bug, it is how the proxy works.

                            Hi
I just saw the change log for the nightlie build and seen that the programmers were able to fix one issue that caused the crash when creating proxy. I believe that this change will fix your issues.
