  • Vray affecting Viewport Performance in Rhino

    Hello
I would like to bring your attention to what seems to be a rather serious performance hit to the Rhino viewport by simply enabling the vray plugin.
Please see this Rhino Holomark Thread:
    http://discourse.mcneel.com/t/holoma...eased/8040/275
From Item #253 (Skysurfer) on down.
I have tested this too and for certain tests I get a 3x -> 30x slowdown in the viewport by enabling the Vray plugin in Rhino.
This doesn't make sense for the UDT test which one would think is a more computations test, which involves deforming thousands of control points, and should not be affected by a plugin??
As you can see from the tests and mine UDT is about 20x longer in many cases with the Vray plugin enabled.
40 sec compared to 1.8 seconds.
    Regards. Michael VS.

I did a test here - bike model and shaded view plus _testmaxspeed. (For me this is the best test to simulate the Rhino display problems within real projects - speed around 5 fps.)

    VfR enabled 18.2s
    VfR disabled 17.4s

No big difference here. What do you think?

      Hello Micha
Perhaps this is only related to the specific Holo2 test?
I have tried simulating similar shape and control points and have found no change in viewing speed with my model and Vray On/Off.
Of course the Holo2 test is actually measuring the speed at which a high control point shape can be deformed at, not just viewing a shape after deformation, and I can say that creating the attached shape I had very slow refresh on my Q6000 whilst performing the UDT with Control Points Visible.
What I have found though is that there is a huge difference in speed between a model with many control points enabled and one with the control points enabled and selected(Hightlighted) in normal Rhino viewing.
So perhaps I should post this on the Discourse forum?
Please see the attached shape which I made quickly and has dense control points when enabled.(F10)
      Then run TestMaxSpeed:
      1. Control Points are enabled (My time 1.1sec)
      2. Control Points enabled AND all control points are selected(Highlighted). (My Time now 16sec)

There is a huge slowdown when control points are highlighted, which is probably a Rhino issue then.?
If you get similar slowdown then I will post this model on the Mcneel forum instead. Michael VS

        Same results here:

        1. Control Points are enabled (My time 1.1sec)
        I get 1.16s

        2. Control Points enabled AND all control points are selected(Highlighted). (My Time now 16sec)
        15.5s

But also if I disable VfR the second test is slow like before. So, it's not VfR.
