  • vray hangs for a few seconds during render

    we're using VfR in an educational environment, windows 7 enterprise. vray will often pause during the render, even extremely simple renders (open rhino, make a box, push render - hang) with nothing else running. it will get started just fine, and then all the render boxes just pause for a few seconds - sometimes a while - then they go on again just fine. it doesn't seem to be specific to any file, i can't find the common thread. maddening. anyone else seeing this?

    Yes it does happen to me sometimes, when I have lots of empty space ,let's say a house,with no ground,so I have lot's of space with nothing to render....the buckets fly where the space is empty and then suddenly come to a halt and start again.
    If I do use DR in that situation,it will do the same thing,but it will crash.

      Interesting. I'll try to see if that's happening with us also though I feel like it happens on more complex scenes also. We aren't using DR for these scenes.

        Yep, I get this all the time regardless of scene complexity. Feels like the old 'checking for a licence' problem.

          right, but it hangs AFTER it already starts the render (it should already have a license)

            Hello,

            It may be worth checking to see if it the GUI license is timing out as mcvltd suggested. If multiple windows are up (Material Editor, Options, Frame Buffer etc.) -- after five minutes of inactivity on one of those windows, the license will time out. This can be resolved by modifying the V-Ray for Rhino.ini file located in C:\Program Data\ASGVIS -- this is a hidden folder. Open the file and navigate to the portion that reads:

            [Licensing]
            gui_timeout_minutes=5

            and change it to:

            [Licensing]
            gui_timeout_minutes=-1

            This should resolve any freezes or hangs in the interface. Some other common causes for hangs or freezing we've come across, especially with more complex scenes, is not enough RAM or mechanical HDD's accessing a network location etc. If the problem still persists, go ahead and send us a dropbox link to the scene so we can take a look.

              This I did 5 years ago,it solves some problems.But what I am talking about here is completely different.The rendering start,everything is going perfectly fine,suddenly it hangs and crash,it occurs on different drawings,every time it is when I do have a big space with nothing to render.
              I will try and find a drawing that does that every time and send it.

              thanks

                      Yes exactly, it's not the UI hanging (which actually we aren't observing any longer, maybe we just got used to it) - this is a pause DURING the render. All render regions pause at once. And it will pause on a very simple area, not just complex reflections etc.
