  • Over aggressive clipping planes

When a Rhino clipping plane is added via the Rhino ClippingPlane command, it will clip any view rendered, even if that clipping plane is not clipping the viewport being rendered, and it cannot be turned off, even if “Skip Rendering” is checked. It will also automatically be named V-Ray Clipping Plane, which it is not.

    V-Ray 6 3.60.02

    Hello, Sam,

The "Skip Rendering" checkbox functions only for Mesh Clippers (i.e. Meshes linked to the VRayClipper). In the viewport, VRayClipper utilizes a Rhino Clipping plane by default. On the other hand, creating a Rhino Clipping plane automatically creates a VRayClipper. Despite this synchronization, it is currently not possible to set different viewport-based properties to the V-Ray clipper.
I have logged this topic for internal discussion. There are a couple of possible solutions both of which need to be carefully evaluated first. Your feedback will be noted.

    Kind regards,
    Peter

If I may file an amicus brief for your internal discussion, so you understand my (and I would assume many other people's) usage of clipping planes in Rhino, they are critical for sectional elevations and details. In any given file, I often will have a clipping plan per detail view, so many tens if not low hundreds. If V-Ray does not pay attention to the per viewport / detail assignment of clipping planes, I would then have to maintain two different models, one for all my usual work, and one solely for V-Ray, which to me seems cumbersome.

      Thanks,
      Sam

The dev team will work on a solution for this. No ETA available at the moment, it is currently logged for the next major release build.

        Kind regards,
