Using any "Render Element" changes the render filename. Is there anyway to prevent this from happening. A switch I'm missing? TIA

What exactly do you mean? Render Elements name themselves automatically - if you save your image using the Save All command, you'd type a certain name - let's say "Exterior02" - which will then be the name of the rendering itself. Every Render Element will automatically take this name as a base and add its own element name to it - like Exterior02.Alpha, Exterior02.MatteShadow, Exterior02.Denoiser etc. Of course, you're able to save the Render Element layers one by one, giving them unique names, but they're still going to automatically add their element extentions after the new name you've given them. So, if you save your Alpha channel as "Alpha"(.jpg), it will still become "Alpha.Alpha"(.jpg) once you visit the folder you've saved it in.

Maybe an example will clear the confusion my original question has caused.
I generate a render with the name "Palm.png" with no render elements selected. I get the expected file output named "Palm.png"
I generate the same render with render element "Denoiser" and I get two files named Palm.effectsResult.png + Palm.Denoiser.png
I'm sure this is useful for someone, just not me, hence my original question. Is there someway to turn this auto renaming feature off?

I don't think it is, but maybe someone from Chaos Group will tell you how it is for sure. What I've seen is, that after some recent update, the default element in the V-Ray VFB panel is set to "effectsResult" and not to "RGB color", as it was all the years before. So, when you've just rendered and want to save just your image, without any render elements, you'll still end up with "Palm.effectsResult.png" instead of simply "Palm.png". The "effectsResult" render element is something I don't quite get. If you visit the Chaos Group docs on V-Ray, "effectsResult" isn't really listed among the render element examples. My guess is, that it is somehow related to the Denoiser and that, when you save out a Denoiser Element the "effectsResult" will always automatically save along. But once again, let's hope for someone from Chaos Group to clarify this.

I've been saving the rendering as of 3.0+ from the VFB. I noticed today that when I save the file from Asset Editor (automatically) it saves all 3 files if I use the denoiser. So basically it now saves Palm.png + Palm.effectsResult.png + Palm.Denoiser.png
Small issue in the realm of things I guess :P

The RGB Color channel is always saved with suffix.
When Denoiser is used, beside all auxiliary render channels needed for its calculation, a couple of more are created - EffectsResult and Denoiser. They both contain the same denoised result. The difference is that if lens effects are used as well, both lens and denoiser output is combined within EffectsResult. This is standard behavior shared between products. The dev team is not planning to alter it so far, although there is an internal discussion about improving some aspects of file naming / tagging.
Kind regards,
