  • Vray next trial

    Hi,

I'm just doing a trial with vray next at the moment. I'm normally using the previous version for jewellery mainly. I'm normally getting satisfying results for diamonds using the environment override in the material, using reflection and refraction maps. Unfortunately the environment override seems to have been removed in vray next. This is problematic as now my diamonds are not looking up to scratch at all...
Is there a work around to override the environment of just the material?

Another issue I'm having is using the RTX tab for rendering is that it render completely black. I have an RTX2070

Thanks in advance for any help,

    Regards,

    Jean

One thing I will add, looking back at my history with vray is every material I spent hours developping is always made useless with every upgrade. This is very frustrating, to say the least.

      Hi jeanat

Kindly note that certain workflows have been dropped for more favorable and optimized ones, however the functionality is still there. Currently, attributes can be added to any V-Ray material and in your case the Override attribute will allow the environment to be overridden (https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...ric-Attributes). Additionally, you still have the global Environment Overrides however they might not be suitable to your needs (https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...ent-Parameters)

Regarding the RTX, could you please make sure that the latest drivers are installed? Also, please check the V-Ray Progress Log for any warning / error messages!

Hi Thanks for your input, I have tried adding an override attribute to my material but it's different to my last version. I use to override the reflection and refraction with a map also enabling me to control the brightness of these maps. In vray next however I only seem to be able to override reflection and refraction with other materials in my scene which is not producing the desired effect at all. The environment can be overridden more or less as before but what I would really need is to be able to override the reflect/refract map. This allows me to brighten up specific diamonds which can sometimes look dark in comparison to others due to positioning in relation to the camera.

        Regards,

        Jean

+1 In the past I used different maps for refl/refr of materials too. It always nice to have all artistic freedom.

Also I liked the function "ignore objects in secondary". Could be great to get this function without the need of the wrapper material. Could be part of the attribute raytrace properties. Is it possible?

The bitmap texture can be wrapped in V-Ray's procedural texture (Simple Mix) and the intensity increased if deemed necessary.

Thanks for your reply, this work around does work to some extent, but what I would need is to override both the environment and the refraction map. Overriding the environment is fine when you are using a white plane, to display rings in this case. However what I need is to produce a pure white background only casting shadows. Doing this with the wrapper material/matt shadow receiver worked well in version V3.6, using the refract/reflect override. In Vray next I've also lost "project environment map on the map geometry". I keep bumping in hurdles with Vray next, using the same settings with work around etc I do not get better animations or renders. I think I might wait for V5 hoping there is something good for jewellers. Will there be?

Same settings as close as can be, Diamonds in v next have wrapper material, not previous version but two very different results...

                  Hi jeanat,

Can you please share an example scene that we can test with?
It's hard to tell how to get the result you're after just by looking at images.
There is maybe something in the base scene setup that can be tweaked slightly to produce better results.
