  • Ocean water material missed

    Hi,

since a few days I'm fighting with materials and try to get a good ocean water material. It should work for the Rhino infinite ground plane and best for GPU. Sounds like a standard task, but it's so difficult. Doe's somebody have an idea or a ready setup?

Question to the team - could a material added to the library please? My dream is a full featured ocean water material with foam and nice looking weaves without repeating pattern.

    Hi,

there is a Water texture you can setup as per your needs,
and also several waves presets in the material library

Is that what you're after ?

Thank you, the "waves" materials I have overseen, I typed in "water" and "Ocean". The procedural materials give a good basic look, also for the Rhino groundplane. Only the black horizontal stripe should be fixed (also visible at your rendering). Do you have an idea - bug or a question of the setup?

General I miss a more advanced ocean material with foam and more sharp waves like here:

And I miss a solution for displaced water. I think on something like the user define a radius where 2D displacement is used and outside the area the displacement is faded to normal mapping. I think often users want to render ships and a really good ocean material could be a big help.

That horizon line is due to microfacet setting in shader. Switch it to Blinn and it'll go away

If C4D is like Max, the installing the Phoenix plugin also installs the ocean shader for displacement, which can be used without having a license.
There is a foam shader also available then, which you use in a blend shader, which will do what you want.

However, at least in Max this is extremely difficult to get working consistently, so this image was done in 2020 whilst I cannot get it to work properly using 21 and vray 5.
          That's another post though

Looks great, that's what I expected. Could be great for V-Ray without extra plugin.

Yeah I don't know why it simply isn't added to the vray base.
It'll be interesting to see if the issues I have with it are the same with C4D - if you install it, that is
