  • Soft edges CPU vs CUDA

    Am I doing something wrong as I can get soft edges to appear correctly (Edge as Bump Map) on CUDA render, but not on CPU render. Same geometry, same settings on both. Actually, in CPU render, they do not show up at all. Tested on several scenes with the latest versions of VFR and Rhino. Thanks!

    Hi jukkavetro

    To achieve the desired Round/soft edges effect, the correct workflow is the following:
    1. Have a material with set up Bump or Normal mapping;
    2. Create a Bump material set to Bump Texture Channel mode and connect an Edges texture for the rounded corners effect;
    3. Slot the first material into the Bump material to achieve the combined effect.
    I've prepared a short screen recording to help you better visualize the process: http://ftp.chaosgroup.com/support/sc...2_15-13-15.mp4

    Hope this will be of help! If you're still experiencing issues in regards to CPU, please do forward some screencaps and steps so we can try and reproduce it.

      Hi Nikoleta, in your opinion is it better to use this process or use applyedgesoftening directly from rhino ? What's better for performances ?

        The V-Ray soft edges are a wonderful tool, you get much more stable results than by Rhino. The Rhino edgesoftening can slow down your model, will be updated quite often if you don't expected, fails at some edges or create artefacts. Try to use the V-Ray edges if you can. If the fake by bump is causing a bad look than I would switch to Rhino softened edges. I use the V-Ray soft edges every day often.

          Thanks Nikoleta! Perfect answer. Screen recording is an excellent way to help users with their issues. Thumbs up!
