  • Dome Light selection with Render Element

    Hello,

I've gone through every fourm I could find, but I wasn't able to find an answer to my problem. Hopefully someone here will be able to help me.

I'm using a Dome Light with an HDRI texture for the background of my rendering. I would like for this background (i.e. river/trees/sky) to be identified in a render element with a single color so that I can easily select it and make edits in Photoshop. I've tried the Background, Lighting, and Self-illumination render elements (as well as quite a few others), but nothing seems to work.

Please help if you know how to fix this!!

    Hi Sebastian,

I believe the key to solving your problem lies with MultiMatte objects. You can find an explanation here: Material Behind Glass Post Production.

Edit: Sorry, I believe its only working with objects. A workaround could be to hide the window material in another render.

I took a look and tried using the MultiMatte element but it didn't work. It highlights materials perfectly, but I don't think you can assign an "ID" to the HDRI; therefore this doesn't work for being able to highlight the background. I need something that is similar to the "Background" render element that will highlight the entire background when using the Rhino Document Sun and not an HDRI.

Are there any other solutions you can think of?

        Hello sebastian_alarcon1,

If you are using V-Ray Dome Light with HDRI map use Self-Illumination Render Element which stores Dome Light information. You can invert the object’s selection in order to select the sky and make a mask from it. Example:

If you are using Rhino Document Sun you can use the default Alpha channel. Example:

For glass materials change Affect Channels under Refraction to All Channels to be able to see sky behind the glass in Render Elements, as was suggested in a thread that staubbir shared.

natalia.gruzdova thank you! It clicked with your post. I hadn't understood what the Affect Channel thing was so self-illumination wasn't working; but then I realized I had to turn on advanced settings for the glass material in order to make that adjustment.
