How does the color mapping work?

Hallo,

today a basic question: what does the dark and bright multiplier? In the last weeks I have used it, but I feel not sure about the usage and the online help dosn't explain the usage.
What is the relation between the multiplier and the gamma value? Should I change both values, if I want to change the gamma?
