    I'm seeing references made to Area Lights - are these the same as rectangular lights or am I missing something?

    You can use Rhino's rectangular lights (more common) ... or you can turn a surface into a light.

      I think I stumbled across using surfaces as lightsources. Was this via the material editor and the emisive layer?

        Yes, but it works in GI mode only. Is like the textured constant from AIR.
        Attention: if you mirror a rhino arealight, the light will shot in the wrong direction - is a current bug.
