  • HDRI images for image based lighting

I've been struggling a bit with finding a good hdri image for image based lighting. Most of the projects I will be working on will be simulating indoor photo shoots of consumer products. Most of the hdri's I have found are of outdoor scenes and make the rendering too yellow, or too blue, or whatever color predominates in the image. I just found a link to a site that has a few hdri's.

    http://www.debevec.org/Probes/

They look like they may work better for me, but they still mostly have too much color or are overly complex.

    Anyone have any good hdri's?

Also, will regular images work well for IBL, or do they need to be high dynamic range?

    Thx

    Andy

    hdri update

I just tried rendering using the hdri's I downloaded from the site I mentioned in my previous post. I'm getting nothing but black.

Is there something I need to know about hdri's to use them for IBL?

There are some HDR file that were causing crashes. If you get a black render then there is something with the HDR that V-Ray does not like at the moment. Can you tell me what file names you have tried so that we can look into this deeper?

      Thanks!

Have a look at flipsides' site:

        http://www.aversis.be/extra_hdri/00.htm

The 'balkon_cloudy_evening' is very good as a general map!

I'm looking for the same - good, but subtle lighting for a selection of various sized consumer products in a standard studio setup. After trailing the web, I've still not managed to find one that will suit all products. (I guess I'm asking too much!!) There are a few companies that sell HDRI's, but some are vastly expensive!!

hope this helps - keep us informed if you find anything?

          Also found this site:

          http://www.hdri-studio.com/

There are a selection of HDRI's here - the 'gels' and 'abstracts' probably aren't for us, but some of the 'neutrals' look as if they might work?? I just don't know if I want to spend hard earned cash 'trying' them???

Has anybody got any experience with these 'maps'?

HDRI images for image based lighting

I have a lot HDRI links here, but no time at the moment to post all. Please, if I forget, rememeber me again to post the links in a few days.

            Here a quick link:

            http://www.lightworks-user.com/hdri_...collection.htm

My experience: sachform do the best.
Some other companies sell very bad HDRIs, sometimes they looks like LDR images in HDR format. Also important is to get full hemispherical images. At ebay you can find cheap one now, but they are not full hemispherical.

              hdri

None of the HDRIs from the site I mentioned seem to work, so for instance, vinesunset.hdr, uffizi_probe.hdr, and building_probe.hdr. I thought at first that maybe they were just too black and the scene wasn't getting enough light, but vinesunset is actually mostly white. I wondered if maybe they are a different type of HDRI, but they do render correctly in the preview panel in the texture editor. I have no idea what I'm doing, so it's possible I'm screwing up somewhere else and the HDRIs are fine.

Many thanks, everybody, for the links to the HDRIs. I considered buying from Dosch or HDRI studio, but paying $75-$100 for a few images seems like robbery to me.

getting the HDRI in the right format

                Hey

Often times you need to convert the hdri image into the correct format using something like HDRI shop. Brazil render is very specific on the way it likes it's hdri images(ie, mirrored ball, longitude/latitiude, light probe, etc...). I don't know if this is the case with Vray4rhino? if so can you guys tell us so that we can use hdri shop to convert the hdri's we have into the correct format.

Another thing that you may wanna do if you find that your hdri lighting is too complex and causing to much noise is to scale it down to say 64x64 and apply a blur filter(although there is a blur function in vray so maybe just crank up the blur multiplier to like 15 or so)

give it a bash and let us know how it turns out.

                Wouter

If you want an alternative to HDRI Shop, I use a very simple piece of software called 'HDR View' - it allows you to not only view the HDRI files, but you can play with the orientation and light intensity (then save the changed file as another HDRI map)

                  http://www.debevec.org/FiatLux/hdrview/

                  It might be of use?

this is the second link under the hdr editors part of micha's post. It seams like this like isnt' working, but the server that it used to be on has something to say. It just needs someone to listen for a little while... won't you listen.
