Re: HDRI images for image based lighting

I was posting it more because of the page itself, then the fact that it was missing. The pagea actually has the server "talking" about how depressed it is. I thought it was funny and was trying to spread the laugh. Thanks for posting the updated link though.

...don't know much about v-ray yet but hdr's can be opened with Adobe Photoshop. Check the internet for full rectangular panorama pictures (2:1). Simple jpegs. You'll find thousands for free. Open them in photoshop...convert to 180 degree circular fisheye, change the 'Mode' to 32 bits/channel and save as hdr file. Voila !!!

Re: HDRI images for image based lighting

yes you can find thousands online, and yes photoshop does support HDR. However, opening a low dynamic range image such as a jpeg, converting it to 32bit channels and saving it as an HDR does not turn the image into a high dynamic range image. It simply changes the file extension.

The hdr stores the exposure information of the images scene. It can be thought of as a slide show of different exposure levels within a single image. This is why the format is 32bit. Converting a jpeg will NOT add this information to the image.

There are a selection of HDRI's here - the 'gels' and 'abstracts' probably aren't for us, but some of the 'neutrals' look as if they might work?? I just don't know if I want to spend hard earned cash 'trying' them???

Has anybody got any experience with these 'maps'?
I downloaded them using my employer's cash to test them. I downloaded Neutral 7. It is awesome for studio lighting. My only complaint is that in the specific layout of number 7 there is a lack of backlighting. Nuber 1 or 2 might work better and I will probably get one of those soon. Also, I only use the 750x375 that came bundled with my 1500x750. I have never noticed a reduction in quality and it keeps them fast. It would also keep it cheep.

Cause the sun artefacts? Is the sun to bright and the rendering blotchy? Here a way to increase the sun intensity:
