  • 'Brushed' Aluminium look - Help needed

    Hi
I'm trying to create a 'brushed' look to an aluminium material without success - I'm using the same fine brushed bump texture I've used for years but somehow my material settings are just 'over powering' it??

Could someone give me any pointers - or better still, their settings! (or EVEN better still - their material???)

    Cheers

PS - Should we set up a accessible materials library for general consumption? - I've got a few I could contribute!

    That would be really helpful!

      Brushed metal settings

      Hi Magnatizerr,

I used this material the other day to create the look of brushed metal for a project I'm working on. I was going for a brushed anodized look (which is why it is so brown), but you could change the environment to be more white to make this look more like aluminum does. Hope this helps.

        insert image?

is it possible to insert a image without havig to upload the image to website first? I don't have a place to upload to.

I could show you an example of brushed metal and settings.

http://imageshack.us/ has free image hosting. Thats what I usually go through. There are several other free image hosting sites. Google "free image hosting" and you should get several to choose between

            here you go

ok so that's a brushed metal effect I did with rhino, unfortunately when I installed the new beta it wiped out my material settings so I can't tell you exactly what they were but basically what you could do is take any of the standard metal materials and pop in this map into the bump reflection channel, strength needs to be pretty low as I recall, something like .025 or around there.

the key to good brushed metal is to use a good bump map, basically in production to get brushed metal you do the equivalent of sandpapering metal in one direction. So take a noise map, then stretch it along it's y axis.

You can search for noise in google, get a nice high res one, pull into photoshop, desaturate, select only one vertical line(using vertical select tool) then alt-t to transform your selection. Then just use the handles to pull the noise across the entire bitmap. Then do the same thing again but use a much softer noise pattern, this breaks up the lines a little, noise maps should always be made with at least two combinations. make the upper noise semi-transparent(obviously)

Maybe you could do it with the procedural materials new in vray?

or if you feeling lazy use this one.

            Good luck

            Wouter

              Thanks Wouter

I've used a very good 'brushed' bump map for years (and in many programs) so I don't think it's my map? But many thanks for yours, I'll also try this one.

I don't think my problem is the bump, I think its something to do with my material settings - I'll try Hoops though just to see if I can get something to work?

              Cheers all
