  • Please help: questions from prospects about V-Ray

    Hi...,

I get here some questions about V-Ray for Rhino, where I don't know the answer yet:

    - Flamingo has about 5000 materials included. Is there a material-library for V-Ray to start with, more than the about 30 materials come with the final release?

    - Is there one big manual als PDF?

    - Is/will there be Network-rendering?

    - Can a license float like Flamingo and Rhino (with McNeels Zoo software)?

    Thank you,

    Michael

We currently have only those 30 or so materials that ship with the final release. However, we have space allotted for users to share their own materials at http://www.asgvis.com/uploads.html That resource will certainly grow as our following increases. Users can also share custom option setups from that location.

    - Is there one big manual als PDF?
We don't have a finalized pdf / chm file but we have a Wiki accesible from http://asgvis.com/vfrhino/help.html where we are compiling that data. Currently there are several tutorials and general information

    - Is/will there be Network-rendering?
We are looking into our options for Distributed / Network rendering for a future service release

Not at this time due to issues with our current licensing scheme - we are planning on upgrading to a system that supports floating licenses and is otherwise more flexible. We are currently still in the research phase of this move.

        Hi abhikaam,

yes I know, Flamingos materials are not the best, but a start.

In my opinion, to sell a renderer to normal users (90%) you need a material library. The experts (10% or less) will create all their materials by their own, therefore they are also experts.

I think V-Ray is worth to be used also by normal users.

        Regards,

        Michael

I definately agree with your point. We are a small development team though so there are some limits to what is feasible for us to do. Our material library will continue to grow both from users sharing and our own development. However, at the moment we can only offer what we have. Our hopes are that our current library is enough to help people understand how to create their own materials - not so much that it will eliminate the need for users to create their own.

            Hi Joe,

just an idea. Doesn't Chaoas Group offer some material librarys for V-Ray for Max. Couldn't these be ported?

Is there a standard file format for material libraries out there?

            Regards,

            Michael

No there isn't a standardized V-Ray material format at this time. We're working on some ideas though.

                Hi Michael,

if you can indicate what kind of materials you have in mind, and post that here, then I am sure together with other users we can come up with a few materials. On the other hand, it should be noted that depending on render settings, especially the gamma settings, materials need tweaking anyhow. I for one would only build materials to comply with rendering in gamma corrected space.
