  • Migrating from Flamingo to Rhino

Hey guys. I am in the process of putting together a small presentation and need some help on a specific topic. The section I need help with is about Flamingo users migrating into VRay. I have been using VRay for a while now, but I have never really worked with Flamingo at all. Any notes about changes to expect with workflow, scene setup, lighting, materials, or any thing else would be greatly appreciated. I know what Vray can do I just need info about switching from Flamingo to VRay. Thanks

      Migrating from Flamingo to Rhino

I don't really need tutorials. I already know how to use VRay, but I don't know Flamingo. I need to know about the process of switching over from Flamingo. Example: Am I going to be able to use the same lights? Any Material change over issues (ie will mapping coordinates still be there)? Things like that. The presentation i am doing this for users of Flamingo, so what whould be things that they can expect while switching to VRay. I don't need to tell them how to switch more of convincing them that it is worth the switch and possibly what the switch will involve.
      Thanks

I would think that they have pretty much everything to "tune" but if the light orientation was correct, they will still have to adjust intensity with the settings they will use inside Vray. If they use a GI...etc you always have to tweak I think. And for the material it's the same soup. You have to create new ones.
But the best way would be to try by yourself. What not download the eval of flamingo ?

        Good luck.

          Migrating from Flamingo to Rhino

Let me help clarify what our need is. Our goal is to make a one page summary of how to migrate from Flamingo to V-Ray for Rhino.

We have Flamingo but we have never used it in production. We are looking for someone who has been using Flamingo in production for a while. It would help if that person has recently migrated from Flamingo to V-Ray for Rhino.

If you think you can help us please contact myself or Damien. Thanks.

          My best,

          Corey

I understand what you want. But I can,t say that there is a particular way to migrate.I have been using Accurender( which is Flamingo big brother)since the very first release in 94-95 I think, and do all my modelling in Rhino since Rhino1,well even before that.It was then called Accumodel
I have now almost swhitch all my production work to VRAY.The two software are completely different.
It is almost like starting over.

One example of that would be the material editor. It is in the material editor that you define the scale of your material, not in the mapping of the actual object. If you have a map of bricks 4 bricks large and 2 bricks high. Then you set the width of your material to 32'' and the height to 7.
All the objects,or all the objects on a particular layer that you want that brick material applied to will show it that way.Not necessary to define a scale for each .

And the list goes on and on.

So basically there really isn't too much that can be really spared or salvaged. Maybe some lights, maybe some materials, but it would pretty much require completely redoing a scene from a "naked" model. Well thats good news...I figured that it was going to be some thing close to that. Now I have to find a way to put that info into a nice, neat, little package so that it sounds absolutely grand. Thanks for your help. I was hoping that there was a magic button that did all of that automatically...maybe I should ask Joe about that.
