  • Translucent Ceiling Panels

Hey all. I am trying to get a material to use as a ceiling panel. It would have fluorescent lights above it, but not show as clearly as this rendering. Or clearly at all, but definitely with glow. Basically, I don't want it to be fully transparent. Any help is much appreciated.

    Here's the test scene:

Can you post a real life image which shows more exactly what you are trying to achieve?

        hi,
the start would be close to this no ?
        a frosted glass ?

to play on the glossiness level of the surface in front of those.

Or do you look for "volume" light ?

That frosted glass is nice! I am thinking I'd like a smooth surface, like glass. But I am not sure I want a volume light. I'd like to be able to see hot spots where the fluorescent fixtures are.

JP, can I get that mat from you so i can play with it?

Oh man I made a mistake. The panel in the test scene I first uploaded at first was with no cap. Ooops. New one is uploaded now.

The best is, you use a textured emitter only. (Look at my homepage portfolio ... there is tricycle with an textured emitter) If you like a reflective surface, place a second offset plane with a reflection (fresnel) layer only. So you will get fast and clean renderings. Only problem (maybe only a little), you must create a texture of the light panel.

Micha, I never thought of a texture for the emitter! Thanks!

                The tricycle image looks great!

                      Sure. It's a 5-minute job in Photoshop...

I'd like to use it as a transparency map as well to maybe get a view of what is above the panels. I think it would be interesting to see the structure of the ceiling. Also, there existing ceiling is concrete with beams and conduit all over the place. It is a university lab building.
