  • rendering wires/ isocurves with vray/ rhino

Does anybody know anyway of achieving this type of effect in Rhino or vray for rhino? I know you could render a wireframe then render a solid model and combine them in photoshop, but is there a cleverer way of achieving this effect?

I didn't check out the link above because I am not a member of that forum and I don't have much time right now - but just a quick answer would be that V-Ray for Rhino currently will only render things that have render meshes. So if you can mesh those objects then it is renderable. We've discussed dealing directly in NURBS but I think we've run into some issues with the V-Ray NURBS plugins that need addressing. We also don't have any toon-rendering stuff at the moment.

Let me know if that didn't answer your question or you need me to clarify anything

I guess what you're basically looking for is outline rendering ala penguin. There is a vray toon shader that we have looked at moving from max to rhino, but to be honest it not really that good. We have actually thought of looking into a way to support penguin materials so that you could have a sketchy type object next to a rendered object. This is something that we'll have to pay more attention to in the future as we have gotten several request for some sort of outline rendering support

Last, my client need some high quality outlines. He own Penguin, but don't use it, because the weak quality. So, I have done it per AIR outlines. If Vray could support simple good quality outlines, it could be a nice feature for design and arch viz. Also it is a question of the price: if Vray support outline, no other software must be bought.

The V-Ray SDK does come with its V-Ray Toon plugin it uses in Max - I'm not sure if that would suit everyones needs or if the translation from Max->Rhino would even work out well for that plugin - but I'm sure we will get to it after we get beyond the other items on our big todo list

Vray Edges Tex might also be a max material that might be useful for rhino users, provided it renders the isocurves as opposed to the mesh itself

So basically the answer is no..?

Something that rendered the isocurves and not the mesh would be very useful...

If you could check out my link, you would see how cool it can be.[/img]

                no link...
but you could do as I already said, a "make2d" of your perspective view, export it to .ai, and do post work on top of your rendering with thoses vector lines.
