    Re: Arch Interiors

    Thanks dalomar.

I’m having a difficult time trying to render an office interior space. I’m using Micha’s settings with IM+LC posted above on January 31, 2007, 02:34:19 PM. I’m using a direct light and area lights in the windows, IM is 200 subdivs and LC subdivs 1000. Because it’s an office space I don’t want to have a very strong light in the windows, but I’m getting splotches on the back wall that is further away from the widows. Any suggestions?

    Direct Light:
    Ph Subdivs 500
    Ca Subdivs 1000
    Bias 0.2
    Radius 0.5
    Subdivs 8

    Area Lights:
    Ph Subdivs 500
    Ca Subdivs 1000
    Bias 0

What are your QMC Sampler settings? Maybe you need to turn your noise threshold down some?

        Subdiv Mult 1

          Re: Arch Interiors

          - noise threshhold 0.002 is to to fine, better use 0.01
          - let min QMC samples at 8
          - set rect light subdivs at 12 or 16 (it's important for smooth IM shadows)

The wall in the background is not textured? The pattern dosn't looks like artefacts. :-\

Suggestion: play a little with light colors. A dark light from outside should be blueish and the interior light could be a little bit warm.

            Re: Arch Interiors

Your definitely going to need to increase the subdivisions on the rec lights themselves. Maybe from 8 to 12 or 16. Also, 200 IR subdivs?? at that point might as well use qmc, you really shouldn't need any more than 80-100 subdivisions max. Samples are another story, and although you want to keep those as small as possible, having that value a 200 is alright. You might want to check your secondary bounces a bit. I would decrease the sample size from .02 to .005 or .0025 (assuming you still are in screen scale) as well as increasing the subdivisions to 1500 lets say. A question...do your rec lights have Store with Irradiance Map enabled? If not that would speed things up allot.

              Thanks for the comments!
I think it’s getting better, but still I get some splotches on the two walls, maybe I don’t have enough light? The ceiling lights are linear, would lowering the shadow intensity help?
Somehow the image looks too neutral, I will try making darker blues and yellows for the lights as per Micha’s suggestion.

              Rec Lights
              Subdivs 16

              QMC
              Noise Threshhold 0.01
              Min Samples at 8

              IR Subdivs 99

              LC Subdivs 1500, Samplesize .005

                Re: Arch Interiors

The ability to globally change the gamma for textures would be excellent. I see one problem, or perhaps I don't understand. For materials used for exteriors you don't want to do this, correct? Perhaps there is a way to be selective about changing the materials. For instance we could keep groups of 'interior' and 'exterior' materials and only modify the one?

                  Re: Arch Interiors

Your lights (except direct light) should have the decay set to inverse squared, or just uncheck No Decay for rec lights. This is how lights react in the real world but remember that you will have to increase the intensity in order for the lights to have the same effect. Try adding more interpolation samples to LC, maybe from 5 to 10 or 15. Also adding more samples for IR might help too (not subdiv).

As far as gamma correction for textures, they should be corrected for interiors and exteriors. Most of the time exteriors can usually do without it, but it should still be there. With the new v4 beta the gamma correction is done globally, allowing you to change all the textures and colors with two clicks. Now that gamma correction is much easier, it would be good to have it checked, save it to a template, and you don't have to worry about it again. Who knew LWF could be so easy

Has anyone tried using new physical sun a sky options for rendering interiors?

                      Re: Arch Interiors

I don't believe that the vray sun/sky are in the beta yet. I've used it with Max on my last personal project, and it came out great. The only source of light was the sun (with the exception of one room)and it worked well, as there was a lot of windows and skylights and things. It really is a must to use the physical camera when using the vray sun. Its about the only way to counter act the sun's intense brightness. I'm not really sure what your really asking about, especially since its not in rhino yet. Once it does get in there we'll probably have a tutorial posted for it.

                      EDIT:
Sun/Sky aren't in the current version, but will be in the next beta. It will also be possible to control the sun direction with the Sunlight command. The next beta version will also install McNeel's RDK feature which adds the sunlight feature and safeframes as well...no more downloading Brazil.

The Sun/Sky will make their official appearance by Friday of this week (16 March) - along with DR and a few other things here and there.
