  • Normal map support?

    Hallo,

I ask me, do vray support normal maps? If yes, do it work with VfR now?

    Regards Micha

PS: If I use the search function of the forum an type in - normal map- and enable "Search for all terms", I get "normal" and "map" but not "normal map". How can I search for "normal map"?

      Normal map support?

It is not supported at the moment, but it is not particularly difficult to add this.

      Best regards,

        Normal map support?

Oh yes, please. My axy-z people are with normal maps and I would like take normal maps from real objects.

            Normal map support?

yea I'm wondering as well. Does normal mapping have anything to do with bump mapping? I know that bump maps simulate surface variations through changing the normals during the render. Does normal mapping work similar to this or am I way off?

              Normal map support?

My english is not so good to explain it, so here a few links and images from an old dicussion at the Maxwell forum.

Normal maaping is an enhanced bump mapping, that looks better than bump mapping and is less memory hungry than displacement. Normal maps store the information in which direction the normal of a surface point show (good to see at the last posted example).

                  Normal map support?

Basically its meant so you can make a really high-res geometry mesh and make normal maps for it- then you can use relatively low-res version of the geometry with the normal map applied for your renderings. At least I believe thats what they use it for in real-time applications - so I imagine its the same use in software rendering applications.
