I was wondering, can you render an object to make it cast a ground shadow so it appears on the ground of the environment image? Or is it a photoshop job?

I tried to make a transparent material for the ground that would recieve cast shadow but havent suceeded to make a good one.

If Photoshop, how would you approach? I'd like to use a rendered ground shadow instead of painting.

Yes, you can do it. Two ways:

* you map the environment to a soft studio ground plane per enironment mapping at the texture UI (first time I tested it some days befor - intersting issu) - disadvantage: you need a very high res env image

* you use the frontal mapping tool from David Rutten for Rhino 4 and map a simple photo to the plane. At my gallery, the last posted images are done with this method. I like this simple method. Best you use a HDRI for env and the frontal mapped image for ground/background.

Befor David wrote the script, I tested some other tricks. Here the link. You can see the soft ground at the screenshots.
