Starter kit issues

HI all:

I'm new, having just downloaded the trial today. I'm looking at the started kit and am having some problems. First, if I just open the file and render, everything is black, if I turn on the "default light" setting then I see something...
secondly, why is the object rendering very, very blurry? I would like to see this thing rendered as the image shown on this forum and in the kit....
