I realize these are under development. What will the difference be between the 2 different 2-sided material types? I'm not familiar with the max and sketchup ones.
The sketch up two sided material is basically for a different material/diffuse on either side. The regular two sided material is to simulate very thin translucent effects like paper. It allow you to set a front texture and a back texture, set transparency, and mix the rendered result between front and back. Although I haven't used it, it is very useful for paper effects, lampshades, curtains, and other thin things like that. At this point I don't believe either one is working, so not too much to worry about using them.
