I'll post an installer for it today - I wanted to do it on Friday but I forgot to grab it from a co-worker before he left. :-[

Did you get the chance to post? If yes, where is it - within files or downloads?

Re: Where is the material convert utility?

            Patience folks...patience.

I want to clear the air here because I think there is a misunderstanding of what this material converter is.

First of all to be clear...it is not some magical one stop standalone solution. It is a plugin for 3ds max. So, you need to have 3ds max in order to convert the 3ds max materials you have in your possesion. We have had a 3ds max 9 version ready for a few weeks. I have asked the development team NOT to post it yet. The first reason being that there a re a lot of people that I have talked to that had 3ds max 8. Plugins for 3ds max 9 do not work in 3ds max 8. So, we have spent the last week porting over to 3ds max 8.

The second reason being that we are trying very hard to make a solid march towards making material creation tools available to ALL users. I will not disclose details right now but we hope you all can appreciate the free product/tool that we hope to release tomorrow.

If you have 3ds max 9 and materials to convert and you want to use our plugin right away, email me at cjr@asgvis.com. The rule is that you will need to assist us in developing materials to release tomorrow....

            Best-

Re: Where is the material convert utility?

This is a completely understandable explanation, wanting to have a quality product. I think the annoyance and frustration is based on the consistent promises of it being released later that day, etc. If this explanation had been given a long time ago, then we would be patiently waiting, as opposed to waiting for "the guy who left with the disk" to come back to the office...

Again, we all are very anxious to get this utility!

Re: Where is the material convert utility?

I'am not a Max user and think that the good way to have a good vfr materials is to share them with the other users of VfR in this forum. I believe that in little time, and with the advice and the talent of ASGVIS boys could create a site like "vray-materials.de for the Max users.

Re: Where is the material convert utility?

                  Question:

Doesn't it make more sense to have the material converter as a RHINO plugin rather than a Max plugin (maybe as a future development)?

The greatest point about having Vray for rhino is for people NOT to have to go through Max for rendering or texturing. So I believe material conversion should be an option WITHIN rhino, just like the vray plugin.

I would try NOT to introduce Max in the process...

                  What do you think?

                  Thanks

                  Luca

Re: Where is the material convert utility?

I understand your point about making it a Rhino plugin (or standalone so it isn't tied to any application ) - maybe we can work that out in the future.

Re: Where is the material convert utility?

I have tried the converter for max 8 now, and you were right, it wasn't a simple magical solution I tried a bunch of mats from vray-materials.de and most of them arent supported by the converter.. and its always the coolest ones that arent supported :-\ Is it any different in max 9?

Anyway, good job nonetheless! The material studio was a good idea! You should build in an upload option in the studio, get this online mat library going

Re: Where is the material convert utility?

I think in the long term the "magical solution" will be to start developing the material library on this site. If some of the more advanced uses began posting their better materials in time it will negate the importance of this converter as the ASGVIS library will become sufficiently large.
I feel that perhaps the effort spent on the converter would simply be better spent on creating/sharing some of thier better materials in this library.
                          Does this make any sense?
                          Cheers.

Over the last day or two I have uploaded over 100 new materials. If you haven't checked the materials in a while then I would give another look. Don't worry...an even larger influx of materials will be soon on the horizon.

I have noticed the new materials dalomar. I have also used quite a few.
I see this as a better solution that a converter from 3D Max.
Just looking through the galleries I see some pretty impressive materials. Once more and more of these start getting shared I think the converter will appear less necessary.
