  • lighting advice....

i've got a large warehouse type space with many collumns in it and no exterior windows to light...
within Rhino, i can light the model in open GL with a few 'Directioonal lights' really well...
but i can't seem to light it well within vray...
??? would anyone have any advice on how they would go about lighting something like this? do i need to make an emitter plane?
i'm trying not to make 200 point lights -- i'd like the scene to render on the quicker side...

    thanks for any advice.

    cheers.

Well I would use rectangular lights that are invisible and put them "within" an object so that their shadows aren't square. After that make sure that the rec lights have a Store with Irradiance Map enabled as this will increase the speed for calculating them. I would not use emitters as those will take longer to sample then lights in most situations and you don't have as much control.

      Hey Dalomar,
thanks for your advice. i really appreciate it.
i havn't really used rectangular lights before in rhino...
what does "within" an object mean? -- if i put it within an polysurface, no light would get out... so i don't believe what i'l thinking is correct...
and what is "a Store" -- i found the Irradiance Map enabled button.

      cheers,
      thanks so much.

I don't mean literally "within" an enclosed volume, but if you had something that simulated a lighting fixture (a simple tube could work depending on how complex you want to get) then using a light within that will cast the shadows of the edge of the fixture rather than the edges of the light (which would look odd bc the light is rectangular). Its not "a Store", but "Store with Irradiance Map", which allows rectangular lights to be calculated faster then pure raytracing
