  • Render slave - XP 64 or 32?

    Hi,

I think about a small render farm of 3 QuadCores. I ask me, couldn't be XP32 good enough for the spawner?
At the slave no other softwre is running than the spawner and the spawner hold the Vray rendermesh only (at the master are NURBS, render mesh and Vray render mesh in RAM). My experience is, that the spawner need very less RAM, but I can't test it here with large models at the moment.

I ask me also, if I use the 3GB switch, will the spawner use more than 2GB?

And is XP good enough or is XP pro needed, because network and remote desktop issues?

I'd say at least XP pro. To be honest, the only way to find out would be to test it. Your logic seams sound so I don't think 32 bit would be a horrible way to go. If you're sending if from your 64 bit machine, going to 32 bit might cause some extraneous issues (I did some DR testing with xp 32, xp64, and vista machines that worked quite well (SR update spawner), but I'm not sure if everything would be fine on a day to day, long term usage).

Today I have seen, that the spawner is full working, even though the QuadCore master is set a 4 LC passes. Could it be, that each slave get 4 passes? Could be nice, if it works so.

Next question, will be there a Linux spawner in the near future? Could be nice for render farms.
