  • V-Ray Sun - Rotate world Coordinates

So I have a building site that is oriented about 35 degrees out of true north. For the sake of ease in modelling a very large and complex building we oriented our building orthogonally. Now I found out that I need to do shadow and light studies and have them be correct. Rotating the whole model is totally out of the question.

Does anyone know how to rotate or re-orient North in the vray sun system?

Not really possible yet in terms of having that be a constant thing (ie every time you change the sun pos it will be back with north on the y axis). I believe Andy (the developer of RDK) has said that adding a "compass" to the sun system is on the list of things to do.

In the meantime, I would advise you to basically make a record of the times of day that you need (via points or a curve @ the sun point), then rotate that whole assembly. Anytime you need to change the time, just move the sun's point to one of the points you've setup. In fact if you place a Dot at that point, you can label it, and snap to it later all in 1 shot.

I was just experimenting with using rhino's sun study with v-ray. There is an 'north angle' option in that process which lets you keep things orthagonal in rhino.

The problem I'm having with that, is that the directional light (sun) in each frame keeps returning to default values which are not bright enough. I can render one frame at a time with no problem though.

I like the manual approach described above. I was just thinking about capturing points from the rhino sun study's dir light and making a sun dial widget out of it. This way I could automate it using bongo.

      Hope this isn't too late!

Brightness should not be a problem, because there a many ways to get a brighter image. You could adjust the camera or color mapping multiplier for the right brightness at default sun values. Also it could help to use the "override" option of the sky environment.
