  • Some Questions

    Hi Guys,

    just some questions i have

    1) before the update of vray, the noise was controlled under the qmc sampler by scaling from 0.2 to 0.001 for fine renderings. In the new vray, under the DMC sampler, this makes no difference anymore. It seems to have moved to the image sampler settings. is this correct?
What is the difference now between them? It would be great to see a manual of what the settings under each item does....like how it effects the image.

    2) When using a rectangular light, should ignore lioght normals be checked or unchecked...what does it do and what is a light portal?

3)When using rectangular lights, you can make them invisible or visible depending on if you want reflections on your products. This is a great feature to get nice highlights on your product but quite ofte the light gets in the way of the camera scene when rendered. Is there a way to get the light to reflect buty not be rendered?

4)Under image sampler, does the image quality become better or orse when increasing the max subdivs?

5)Under adaptive subdivisions, the standard presets are -1, 2. is that a low or a high setting and what would you aave to change to make the image quality better or worse.

    6) Under DMC sampler. The default min samples are 8. Would increasing this be better or wose for the image quality.

    7) Under IR Map. Should randomize sample be on?

What are the 2 reflection and refraction slots used for in the environment tabs? Why would you put in a background image but get another reflection....wouldnt you do that under the material section?

Sorry for all these questions but every where you read you just get suggested settings by people but it never explains the basics of things like, the higher or lower the value the better the quality etc.

    Anyhow thanks in advance

    Re: Some Questions

Oh yeah, forgot one more things.

how is it possible to see how your HDRI map is positioned in the model space. Its quite often guess work to spin the map and hope for a good reflection. In some programs you get to see the map on a small ball on the scene to see how its positioned. Is there a way to see this?

    Kind reards

      Re: Some Questions

      1. Its still doing things, but won't be used for ADMC calculations...thats the one in the Image Sampler settings. This is a good thing cause it allows you to calculate light at one noise level and AA at another. There should be a way to disable the ADMC noise sampler so that it will take its value from DMC sampler, but I don't think that is in there yet.

      2. Ignore light normals will make it emit light in a fairly even hemisphere. If you don't have that enabled, then the light will be more focused normal to the light. Light portals will take their color and intensity from the environment behind it.

      3. Not yet...sorry.

      4. Everything becomes "better" when increasing max subdivisions...in AA its no different

      5. Well having any number thats less than -1 will typically lead to things being pretty bad. Usually by 4 or 5 adaptive subdivision gets about as good a quality as it can get.

      6. Definitely not worse, but not necessarily better. Basically the minimum samples controls the least amount of samples that will be taken, regardless of any noise or adaptive settings that you have. This makes those calculations more reliable, but if all of your calculations need more samples than the minimum, the it won't really make any noticeable difference.

      7. Yes

      8. The material one is only for one material. So if you want it to be for all objects, then you'd use those.

      9. Sorry, but there's no direct way to see this...Micha did have a work around, but it required making an almost sphere, flipping the normals, and mapping it with the environment. I worked really well, but it just takes a few extra steps.

        Re: Some Questions

        3) ... it's on the wishlist since months and I ask for it every month, so I hope, it will come, because it cause strange effects like glossy material are looking not glossy

8 ) Very useful for product shot with a white background. You can control anything you want independent.

        9) Yes, it works well and you must convert HDRIs to LDRIs befor, best not so high res. The sphere must be a mesh, because only closed mesh objects allow to flip the normal. Attached an old example image that I found here (used is a high res panorama from flickr.com):
