Re: Rendering Diamond
I would also like to know.
Ive been playing around using the default diamond material with a chrome surface directly behind it... I get some results, but nothing as realistic as what is in the gallery.
Is it all in the HDRI? I remember reading somewhere about this before and the HDRI used was of a stained glass window, but i cant find that post anymore.

Re: Rendering Diamond
Try looking on this site www.gemvisiononline.com you should find everything you need to know about rendering diamonds in the v-ray rendering part of the forum.
maps and so on should also be available for download as well as a bunch of other stuff also interesting for jewelery rendering.
hope it helps

Re: Rendering Diamond
ok i see sorry they seem to have move the forum and taken all the maps and other downloads with it...
i'll give you a brief explanation and a map that should get you underway to better results.
no hdri needed. just pick the clear-glass material in vray and apply these changes:
reflection: change the reflection Map to both IOR 2.9 (you might want to tune that up later)
Diffuse: unchanged
Refraction: increase the IOR to 2.47 the IOR is the indice of refraction 2.47 beeing the indice of the diamond the more you increase this value the more dramatic the diamond effect will be. i'd bump it up to 2.8. If you find and IOR table this will help you greatly in replicating other gems (..google).
all else left unchanged
Options: just add double sided all else unchanged
Maps: add a background map this one i'm joining here is just a quick mock up i've drawn on paint as all others are at work but it does work. you can also crop a pic of the inside of a diamond and apply that but keep in mind that drawing it from scratch will help you get rid off unwanted spectrum colors in your stone or add some for that matter.
So background map set to environment => mirror ball check tile
the multiplier will help you get more white into your map and lighten your stone
that should give you better results all you have to do then is experiment with these and you should get a stone looking just like you want it.
also to watch out for is your stone. all facets joined and no disc going across the girdle. (some rendering programs apply decals on those) if you see one just explode the stone several times remove the disc join all the facets up again. and reapply material
