  • Jagged Edges

Hi, I don't really understand the settings for 3d, so I'm using the settings Micha used for the dinosaur. I decresead the Noise Treshold to 0.005 but I'm geting some weird edges. How could I solve this?

    Thanks

    Re: Jagged Edges

They are actually antialiasing artifacts due to float point accuracies. Believe it or not, there's actually very good antialiasing allong those edges, but it happens at a range in which a monitor can't display (ie brighter than white).

Anyway, your solution is to enable Clamp Output and Subpixel mapping in the Color Mapping rollout

Thanks, that worked very good now! It also improved my render time.
I have a question then... If this get rids of the jagged edges, and lower the render time, should i use it all the time? What are the "side effects"?

        Re: Jagged Edges

The reason why you'd not want to use it is because it decreases the dynamic range of your image. In you're first render if you want to decrease the exposure, the areas that are brighter than white will stay bright until the exposure is decreased enough for those values to be displayed on your monitor. In the image w clamping, decreasing the exposure will make the whole image darker, even if there were areas that were brighter than white. Clamping throws away all that information that your monitor can't display.

As far as why it makes your rendering go faster, V-Ray calculates brighter areas of an image with more accuracy because a brighter sample has more of a capability to affect the overall result within the scene. If you have a lot of area that is very bright, then you will have a lot of area that can be sped up by not having to calculate all of those "brighter than white" areas...

Ok, thanks for the info, I'll do the clamping stuff only when I'm in trouble then =)

Damien, if you see Joe, please ask for the clamp level option.

I've asked, but no dice...not sure why, but its a great option.
