It doesn't work (yet?), but you can extract the softened rendermesh with that plugin.

Glad you asked about it. I saw it, loaded it and extracted the mesh. It has already helped out on some renders. The look falls apart when you get much bigger than 1-2 mm or get really close but I think those are the intended limitations. It is a nice short-hand solution.
