Is it possible to simulate an image being projected to a wall? and have an object in between receiving the projection? confusing?

example: a movie theater and some one stands up, receiving the light from the projector, but causing a shadow on the screen

I have not tried this, but I would bet that the success of this depends on how you set up the scene. In general, its always best to model and set up a rendering as close to the real world simulation that you're trying to capture. In this sense, i would suggest setting up a "projector" that had a very strong light going through a refractive version of what your trying to project. The short cut of slapping it on an emissive layer will most likely not work very well, since it won't be sharp enough to actually "project" the image. I'm doing a few tests myself and will let you know how they come out.

... I would try a black diffuse material with a textured transparency, so that the shadow of a spot or pint should be colored.

So my test seamed to work...basically I've made a little black box that is open at one end and closed at the other. At the closed end is a point light, and at the open end is a surface. That surface at the open end has a material that only has a refractive layer, has the image that you're looking to project mapped to Refraction color and Affect Shadows enabled. Obviously I have a surface that this will project on to some distance away from the "black box". It doesn't appear that you'll need any GI trickery for this one, just adjust the intensity of the light in the black box to make the projected image appear as you'd like in you're scene.
