  • Rhino Crashing: Culprit Vray.

Vray for Rhino 4.0 has been working flawlessly for me since I got it and all of a sudden BOOM! Every time I hit the render button and the Vray composting window shows up (black) the entire program crashes. I've tried everything from copying my model to a fresh Rhino template to scrapping all of my materials and reapplying them. Here is the error message I'm getting...

I've called Rhino support and they say it has to be a Vray issue and they've never heard of it since Vray shouldn't be accessing the Rhino License manager. The Vray support line is closed so I figured I would post it here first. Any and ALL help is greatly appreciated!

I would deinstall and install vfr first - maybe it helps.

Well, we're definitely not tying into the license manager as that's practically impossible. The only thing that I would guess that might be happening (other than a bump install as Micha suggested or a messed up registry key or something) would be if you were using a floating license along with the zoo and both were trying to send/receive request at exactly the same time. This would still be very odd as there's no communication between those two components either and they should be communicating on different ports.

Start with a reinstall and see where that leads you.

Unfortunately, the same thing is occuring even after uninstall/reinstall. > Now, I'm not even getting the error message. The program just shuts down completely. It has to be associated with Vray in some manner or form, because if I change rendering programs to flamingo, it works fine. Also, I thought it may have been just the file I was working with was corrupted, but it happens on any file when the rendering button is pressed. I'm clueless here! ???

I've never seen this before. My only suggestion would be to reinstall Rhino and see if that helps because there's no setting or anything that would cause this. We haven't seen this during our testing, so its got to be something going on with something in your setup.

HUGE thanks to Damien and Marcus at ASGVis for all the help. The problem has finally been resolved! After uninstalling Vray and reinstalling it about 4 times and doing the same with Rhino itself twice, the crash still occured, but with their keen insight, the problem was eventually found...

...just make sure all of your map files in your materials are in RGB format kids... yeah, yeah, laugh it up folks. It's always the most simple things in life that cause the biggest problems. Ha! ;D
