  • Help with super yacht render

    Hi guys,

I am doing a design for a super yacht to be entered into the World Superyacht Young Designer competition, the deadline is 31st Jan!! I have pretty much finished the model of my yacht but now I need to make it look sexy. I'm a bit of a beginner with vray and I was hoping you guys could give me some help. Below is a simple render I did of the yacht with just a Sky and some basic materials. I know it needs quite a bit of work if I want to make it look as good as some images I have seen on the gallery here!

Basically I was looking for tips on how I should be setting up this kind of scene, what kind of materials should I be using etc

For example I have been looking at some car rendering tutorials and they seem to place loads of rectangular lights everywhere, is this the right thing to do or should I just stick to a sky?

Just to clarify I'm not aiming to make a complete scene e.g. water etc, just to make the model look nice. I know I'm being a bit vague on what I want the outcome to be but I'm sure you guys know what I mean when I say I want it to look sexy

    Thanks

    Al

my hint for the sun light:

    * disable default light and setup a sun light per command _sunlight
    * set at the environment sky options this nw sun as sunlight instead the "default" one
    * now you can manipulate the sun light direction so that the ship model get the light from a direction you like

micha that helped a lot - was using a sun system before but didnt realise I had to set the environment to it instead of default!

I'm spending ages trying to get the right material settings for the main hull. but it can't seem to get the balance right, it seems to overexpose really easily - e.g. just turn 100% white. I definitly want some of the areas to look like this but I find its meaning some of the features aren't showing up

I based the material on a white glossy plastic - but maybe I should use a more metallic surface??

      thanks

Re: Help with super yacht render

Overexposured ... some times it helps to use color mapping "reinhard" and a burn value below 0.8 (I would try 0.8..0.6). So, the bright areas dosn't burn out so fast. But befor I would try to lower the sun intensity, but keeping the sky brightness. The trick is: set the sun intensity at a lower value like 0.25 and the multiplier of the sky "texture" at 4. So, the sun is less intensive like from a little bit fog in the high regions of the sky. Be careful if you play with the burn value, the image can be looking dull, if you use a to low value.

metallic material ... look at the material tutorial at the ASGvis pages. You need a clear reflection layer with fresnel (clear finish), a blury reflection layer without fresnel (metalic effect) and a diffuse layer (against a pure metal effect).
