  • Vray Scatter Plugin

    Hi ASGVIS Team,

I was wondering if there were any plans to implement Vray Scatter for VFR for future releases?

    Thanks,
    Hoop

    Re: Vray Scatter Plugin

Well, the first thing that the scatter plugin needs is V-Ray Proxies, which will be in the next release. Beyond that I'm not sure what else V-Ray scatter does other than place them randomly on geometry (with some scaling and rotation). The intention is to have V-Ray proxies very closely tied to blocks, so if you can find a script that will randomly place a block, that that should translate to proxies. However, none if this is implemented yet, so how it winds up working in the end might change.

Some days befor somebody posted a tool for random tree (object) placement on a surface at the rhino forum. The tool based on scripts from David Rutton.

Thanks for the replies Damien and Micha. At the risk of sounding stupid, what is a Vray Proxy? If it's like a block then I'm assuming that it will help significantly with memory reduction when dealing with a large amount of geometry in a scene. Would this work like instances in Maxwell so that you could have a very high amount of polys in a scene without a huge memory hit?

          Re: Vray Scatter Plugin

You're pretty much right on point. A V-Ray proxy is actually a VRmesh file that is dynamically loaded from the hard disc. This geometry can be instanced however many time you'd want, and it won't add any additional geometry to the scene, since its all ready from the hard disc. Also, since they are read from the hard disc, and not permanently kept in memory, this will also keep memory usage to a minimum. All in all, its a great system, and its going to be one of the major features within the next full release.

That sounds awesome! I can't wait, this will be a HUGE help! BTW, is there a public list anywhere that outlines what your team is planning on, upgrade wise, for the next release?

No, nothing public yet. We'll try to put something up as soon as its feasible for us to do so. Right now, we're too far out from all the things that would be on that list, so its too early to say. Proxies are at the very top of the list and I would highly, highly doubt if the next release didn't have them in there.

I found the Rhino scatter toolbar&tools for random placement of objects (trees...)

The random point tool of the links above dosn't support polysurfaces, but I remember me that this version support it:

                          Re: Vray Scatter Plugin

This is actually the latest version here http://news2.mcneel.com/scripts/dnew...m=308431&utag=
No offense to David but I replaced his script with another that allowed more options for distances between points. I think this was the newest one. I use mostly bilboard trees which is why the "Face Me" script is in there but you can also randomly place 3d objects of any kind. Vray scatter is OF COURSE much much more powerful and would be great to have but this certainly makes the job alot easier than manually placing hundreds of trees across a flowing surface. If I get the time (still in school) it would be nice to be able to add the ability to randomly warp the copied objects because that is something that Vray Scatter does.
