  • how do i activate progressive path tracing?

    hey!

i'm totally new to vray and learned rhino just a few weeks ago. i think its great - i love rhino!
i wanted to render a very complex interior setup of the "palazzo dello sport" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palazzetto_dello_sport) in rome for a student project where we had to model and render it.

no interior lights, just the GI from outside the building.
    rhinoceros 4 SR5, Vray 01.05.29

    first i tried it with:
irradiance map + deterministic monte carlo -> it resulted in a very strange image with dark blobs - or something like that, all over the image.
after reading through the forum i tried:
irradiance map + light cache -> the image was much better and i was relieved that i had an image to hand in.

but reading through the forums i found progressive path tracing (ppt) and i wanted to try it out. but it seems that i cant activate it in my version of vray.
furthermore the problem i have is that there is no complete guide on vray for rhino, i just found something on vray for 3d studio max.

so my two questions i have are:
    - how do i activate ppt? i just can select path tracing in the mode setting - but not ppt
    - is there a completet guide of vray for rhino with detailed information on everything like "Francesco Legrenzi - VRay The Complete Guide( for 3ds max)" ?

about me: i'm an architecture student living in vienna, austria. so excuse me if my english isnt that clearly understandable and for the mistakes i make.

V-Ray on Rhino / Sketchup works the same as V-Ray for Max. It's just that currently we're lacking a few features. So Francesco Legrenzi - VRay The Complete Guide covers every feature that's available for VfR and VfSU.
The UI differs, but the names are the same.

Don't know. Maybe it wasn't exposed in the V-Ray SDK?
        Damien will probably know this.

additionally i wanted to ask which are the best settings in vray for the following scene:

this is the result with IM+DMC:

what can i do to avoid the dark spots scattered all over the image?

          and this with IM+LC:

          thanks for the fast reply!

Is your DMC Sampler Adaptive amount set to 0.85?

What are your IR settings? Have you tried increasing the HSph. Subdivs?

Re: how do i activate progressive path tracing?

i have tried to increase the Hsph. Subdivs, but they hadn't any effect on the picture, except it took a lot more time to render.

But my DMC Sampler adaptive amount actually was set to 1 - i dont know why, because the standard is 0.85.

              anyway - thanks a lot!

while rendering the picture with the new settings i saw that there is only 1 prepass for the Irradiance map even though my setting under min rate is -3 and max rate is 0

Could it have something to do with the Distributed Rendering setup i'm using? or doesnt has the DR anything to do with it?

Re: how do i activate progressive path tracing?

                That's because of the DR.
When you use DR it will do all the passes the first time I processes that bucket.

sorry, but i dindt really understand what you want to say.

so its because of the DR

does it the 4 passes in every singe bucket?
or does it only make one pass for each bucket?

what if there are still black spots? can i just decrease the DMC sampler adaptive amount below 0.85?

Re: how do i activate progressive path tracing?

Cool project...I've actually had a chance to visit that project when I was in Rome a few years ago, so I'd definitely like to see how the rendering comes out....

Any, PPT is just an extra mode in the LC settings. Its pretty straight forward, you just set the mode to Path Tracing (it will be on Single Frame by default) and then set the number of LC subdivisions to 65000 (that's the most subs LC will EVER take). The go ahead and let it do its thing. If you want a little "control" you can adjust the sample size, but there really isn't that much of a reason for that...

If you want a "one-click" solution, go to the downloads section and download V-Ray Utilities. One of the commands that is exposed is visProgressiveRender which will automatically set all this up for you.

Also here's the PPT tutorial from the Chaos Group. It might be good to read through as there are a few gotchas with PPT.

Re: how do i activate progressive path tracing?

i dont seem to find the V-Ray Utilities you described. can you give me a link? i just found this site: http://software.asgvis.com/index.php...Asgvis%20Tools

so, i just set the mode to path tracing, not as described in the tutorial to progressive path tracing (and of course the subdivisions)?
just asking, because i dont even have the button for PPT just for PT

with PPT do i have to set both engines to LC, or is one enough?

here is the rendering with IM+DMC +exposure correction (very handy btw)

and this one is the same +color level correction

its still a little bit splotchy - how do i get rid of that?

btw - i think its great how fast my questions are answered! thanks a lot!

edit: another question: is DR working with PPT?

Re: how do i activate progressive path tracing?

here are the renderings from the outside. i'm quiet happy with them because we didnt had to add any materials or anything - just hand in renderings of the finished construction we made in rhino.
btw - i didnt make it alone, my partner made the columns outside and some of the ranks inside. i made the rest.

Re: how do i activate progressive path tracing?

Path Tracing mode defaults to being a progressive render. Technically you should have both engines set to LC, but since being in PPT mode won't kick the render into the next stage of the render, it really doesn't matter

Any LC calculation is not shared across DR nodes.

The Utilities are not there, so I've asked Fernando to get them up today some time.

are the utilities up there yet?

if they are - i cant find them
